Computational Vision Lab at Caltech

*"Computer Vision for Biodiversity Monitoring and Conservation" *

Sara Beery and Elijah Cole will present recent advances in computer vision
and machine learning for biodiversity monitoring. They will also discuss
their recent field work in Kenya and upcoming biodiversity-focused machine
learning challenges

Sara and Eli are both PhD students and NSF Graduate Research Fellows in the
Computational Vision Lab at Caltech, advised by Dr. Pietro Perona. Their
group studies visual recognition: how we tell what objects and information
images contain and how to build systems that can do this automatically. The
group's Visipedia project is learning (among other things) to perform
reliable species identification in images from eBird and iNaturalist and
can be seen in action in the Merlin and Seek apps.
Sara and Eli are also connected to Microsoft Research's AI for Earth team
and the Google Research/Wildlife Insights team.
