I am writing to let you know that Yale's new Institute for Foundations of
Data Science (FDS) will start holding a weekly colloquium on Wednesdays at
4pm in DL220.

(this is the institute that has been called the Kline Tower Institute, but
Kline Tower is not yet open)

The first talk will take place this coming Wednesday, Sept. 21.
It is "Gaming the Learning”, by Amin Karbasi.
The abstract is:

Consider the task of learning an unknown concept from a given concept
class; to what extent does interacting with a domain expert accelerate the
learning process? It is common to measure the effectiveness of learning
algorithms by plotting the “learning curve”, that is, the decay of the
error rate as a function of the algorithm’s resources (examples, queries,
etc). Thus, the overarching question in this presentation is whether
interaction accelerates learning. It turns out the answer is hidden in
better understanding the two-player infinite games. So, if you like games
and statistical learning, then this talk might be of interest to you.

This will be followed by a talk by me on Sept. 28, entitled "Balancing
covariates in
randomized experiments."

and a talk by Rex Ying on Oct. 5, title TBD.

In theory, I would include a link to a web page with this email and I'd be
sending this email to a curated mailman list.
Unfortunately, theory does not apply to Yale's ITS. The do promise that
these things should exist very soon, and that our website will be
fds.yale.edu.
In the meantime, we are listing our talks at https://yins.yale.edu/
<https://yins.yale.edu/>

Please forward this announcement to those you think might be interested.
