Hi all,

Our last Physics x Data Science seminar for this semester is this Wednesday, April 23 from 1-2 pm in SPL 57 with Matthew Ho<https://maho3.github.io/> and Shivam Pandey<https://github.com/shivampcosmo>, both post-doctoral researchers at Columbia University. Their shared talk is titled, "Learning the Universe: Building an Accelerated Modeling Pipeline for Cosmological Surveys".

Following the seminar, we'll have an AI Town Hall meeting to discuss the use of AI in graduate research and training -- feel free to stay if you're interested!

Abstract: The Learning the Universe collaboration is developing an accelerated mock pipeline for simulation-based inference of galaxy formation and cosmology, combining state-of-the-art machine learning techniques with modern cosmological simulations. By integrating high-resolution simulations, fast emulators, and inference techniques, our approach enables the efficient and precise extraction of cosmological information from large-scale structure surveys. In this talk, we will present our methodology and highlight its application to the SDSS BOSS CMASS spectroscopic galaxy sample, demonstrating its effectiveness in constraining cosmological models with field-level information. We will also discuss our developing plans for modeling next-generation surveys, including state-of-the-art, field-level halo and galaxy emulators. As one example, we recast the forward modeling of galaxies from N-body simulations as a language translation problem, enabling the use of transformer-based architectures to map between dark matter fields and galaxy catalogs.

As usual, are also welcome to join via zoom: https://yale.zoom.us/my/ngluck

Hope to see you there!
