Dear All,

Just a reminder that our first meeting of the new year will be Friday the 22nd
at 3-5 in Rm 116 of the Whitney Humanities Center. The first reading will be
the work of Nathaniel Mackey who will be joining us for a special session on
Thursday the 28th (not the 27th as I mistakenly mentioned with the last
e-mail). Mackey's 2 most recent books--Splay Anthem (poems) and Paracritical
Hinge (poetics) are now available (for free--paid for by our group's funds) for
regular members who are planning on attending those Mackey sessions. The books
can be found on a shelf in the main office in WHC below the mailboxes. Be
sure to dig around a bit as the copies of splay anthem are behind the copies of
Paracritical Hinge.

Paracritical Hinge is a long and somewhat multivalent book(Mackey brings
together Spanish poetics of "Deep Song," African history and mytology, Jazz,
and Black Mountain poetics, for instance), so we might want to focus our
attention on certain essays. I would recommend the introduction, "Paracritical
Hinge," "Cante Moro," "Wringing the Word," and "Palimpsestic Stagger," as being
the most specfic essays in terms of looking at Mackey's poetics. The essay on
Robert
Duncan's war poetry is a bit of a tour de force but might be better put to use
if and when we read Duncan. These are just my suggestions, offered sotto voce.

Your humble secretary and procurer of books,
Richard Deming
