Dear Friends,

On Friday, October 2, the WGCP met for our first of two sessions devoted to Dan Beachy-Quick’s latest collection of poems, gentlessness. I am attaching a set of questions that arose from that compelling and generative discussion of the work. It should give everyone an idea of what was covered. The conversation circulated around the tension and affinities between tradition and experimentation, between private and the personal, and issues of how these poems challenge notions of subjectivity that draw upon lyric traditions while also complicating them.

The questions I am attaching will serve as prompts for our next session, Friday October 16th from 3 PM - 5 PM in room B04 of the Whitney Humanities Center. The poet himself will join us that day for an organic, collegial dialogue about his work. We look forward to seeing you at the next session And do feel free to invite any interested parties. The WGCp is open to everyone, even first time visitors.

I’ll paste below word of two upcoming events that might be of interest (one happening today!).

Onward, ever,

Richard Deming, Group Coordinator

Today, October 7, at 4:00pm in LC 211, Srikanth Reddy will present "The O of Wonder: A Syzygy" as part of the Bagley Wright Lecture Series on Poetry. In this talk, Reddy traces a history of wonder in the Western poetic tradition from Homer to Milton to Ronald Johnson. This event is free and open to the Yale community.

Srikanth Reddy is the author of two books of poetry–Facts for Visitors (2004), and Voyager (2011)–both published by the University of California Press. A book of criticism, Changing Subjects: Digressions in Modern American Poetry, was published by Oxford University Press in 2012. He has received fellowships and awards from the Asian American Writer’s Workshop, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Creative Capital Foundation, among others. A graduate of the Iowa Writers Workshop and the doctoral program in English at Harvard University, Reddy is currently an Associate Professor of English a the University of Chicago.

The Bagley Wright Lecture Series seeks to provide mid-career poets with the opportunity to explore in depth their own thinking on the subject of poetry and poetics, and to create lasting works of criticism and poetics that will help current practitioners in the art of poetry, along with scholars and general readers, to more fully understand poetry as it is written and read in our time.
