He will give a Computation and Society Colloquium titled "Connections between AI and Neuroscience: Lessons from a Classroom" Venkatesh Murthy Raymond Leo Erikson Life Sciences Professor of Molecular & Cellular Biology, and the Paul J Finnegan Family Director of the Center for Brain Science, Harvard University [cid:ii_lobj52381] Friday, November 3, 2023 11:00 am to 12:00 pm Eastern Host: Nisheeth Vishnoi Venue: 3rd Floor, 17 Hillhouse Ave If you would like to meet the speaker, please contact the host. This is an in-person event and follows Yale University's COVID-19 policy Abstract: One cannot escape discussions about AI and the brain, separately or linked, anywhere in society. This includes the classroom. As a practicing neuroscientist with an abiding interest in AI, I have designed a course to teach undergraduate students concepts of intelligence and computing, linking brains and machines. There is an enormous appetite for this topic, and I have learned much from the challenges in communicating key ideas in fast-moving areas without assuming prior (technical) knowledge. I will share some thoughts gleaned from my teaching experience. Lessons learned from teaching are increasingly informing my research program, from which I will highlight some examples. Speaker biography: Venki Murthy was born in India. After getting a B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, he came to the United States with a vague idea of combining engineering and biology. A degree (M.S.E.) in Bioengineering from the University of Washington, Seattle led to his interest in neuroscience. A Ph.D. in Physiology & Biophysics at the University of Washington followed, and postdoctoral work at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, La Jolla, solidified his path in neuroscience research. Venki came to Harvard University as an Assistant Professor in 1999 and is now the Raymond Leo Erikson Life Sciences Professor of Molecular & Cellular Biology, and the Paul J Finnegan Family Director of the Center for Brain Science. His research aims to shed light on how collections of neurons in the brain process information and give rise to behaviors, with a current emphasis on the sense of smell. He is also interested in the connections between artificial intelligence and brain science, and teaches an undergraduate course titled ?Artificial and Natural Intelligence?. An older profile of Venki can be found in the Harvard Gazette. This event is free and open to the public. Talk Title: "Analyzing artificial neural networks to understand the brain" ? Date: Mon, November 27th, 2023 ? Time: 12:30 - 2:00 PM ? Location: 100 College Street, Room 1167 *About the Speaker: *Dr. Grace Lindsay is an Assistant Professor of Psychology and Data Science at New York University, with a background that includes a BS in Neuroscience from the University of Pittsburgh and a PhD from Columbia University's Center for Theoretical Neuroscience. Her research is focused on using artificial neural networks to understand brain function, particularly in the realms of attention and sensory processing. Dr. Lindsay also explores the efficacy of current tools in interpreting neural activity. Additionally, Dr. Lindsay has authored a popular science book titled "Models of the Mind ", where she delves into the intersection of mathematics, physics, engineering, and neuroscience. If you are interested in learning more about her work, please visit Dr. Lindsay's personal webpage . *Talk Abstract:* In the first part of this talk, I will present work showing that artificial neural networks with recurrent connections can replicate broad behavioral patterns associated with dynamic visual object recognition in humans. An analysis of these networks shows that different types of recurrence use different strategies to solve the object recognition problem. The analysis of these networks, however, introduces another question: are the tools of neuroscience suitable for understanding complex distributed information processing systems? In the second part of this talk, I will discuss?and solicit feedback on?a research plan for testing a wide range of analysis tools frequently applied to neural data on artificial neural networks. I will present the motivation for this approach as well as the form the results could take and how this would benefit neuroscience and the field of interpretable AI. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There has been an increase in research interest in studying the neural bases of social cognition. In this multi-disciplinary event, investigators studying neural mechanisms of social behaviors in different species (humans, nonhuman primates, rodents) and at different levels (areas, circuits, cell types) will get together to discuss how their work informs one another. This workshop will feature the Keynote address by Dr. Dayu Lin from NYU and the work of six Yale researchers utilizing naturalistic social interactions using a wide arrange of technical approaches in multiple species and at different levels of analysis. A panel-based discussion session will be followed by interactions among researchers during a reception. Please register here by Monday, December 4th, 2023, at 12 pm. To share questions to the panelists, please use this form. We are looking forward to seeing you there. Talk Title: "Analyzing artificial neural networks to understand the brain" ? Date: Mon, November 27th, 2023 ? Time: 12:30 - 2:00 PM ? Location: 100 College Street, Room 1167 About the Speaker: Dr. Lindsay has authored a popular science book titled "Models of the Mind", where she delves into the intersection of mathematics, physics, engineering, and neuroscience. If you are interested in learning more about her work, please visit Dr. Lindsay's personal webpage. Talk Abstract: In the first part of this talk, I will present work showing that artificial neural networks with recurrent connections can replicate broad behavioral patterns associated with dynamic visual object recognition in humans.
