Developmental programs within neural stem cells and their lineages program identity, connectivity, and function of individual neuron types, and we believe that understanding circuit development will reveal the organization of information flow in the nervous system that shapes behavior. Testing this hypothesis spans disciplines from developmental biology to behavioral neuroscience and requires diverse expertise, from molecular biology to imaging to mathematical modeling. Over the course of this meeting, we will address the following broad challenges: 1) How lineage-derived information shapes circuits and connectivity patterns for innate and learned behaviors 2) How endocrine and paracrine developmental signaling coordinate developmental transitions and sex differentiation events across the brain to produce juvenile and adult behaviors from the same genome 3) The development of unprecedented, evolutionarily relevant circuit engineering approaches and design of new computational modalities in living brains.... MORE There are no registration fees and Janelia covers the cost of meals and onsite accommodations for all participants. Travel scholarships are available to those in need. We especially encourage applications from those who identify with groups that are traditionally underrepresented in science. Janelia conferences are small, and we may not be able to accommodate all applicants. We strive for a diverse attendee pool with broad representation across labs and therefore may limit participation to one person per group. Preference is given to applicants who are active researchers in the field and can present their work as a poster or selected talk. Since 2011, NINDS has supported the BRAINS program for early-career neuroscientists from diverse backgrounds, including historically underrepresented and marginalized groups, who are pursuing or interested in pursuing academic careers. The BRAINS program was also recently awarded a grant from the Dana Foundation to explore the intersection of neuroscience and society in our programming. Thus, for the 2024 BRAINS cohort, we are interested not only in early-career applicants from any area of neuroscience but also early-career researchers who have expertise at the intersection of neuroscience and society. To be eligible for the program, applicants must be (1) early career (pre-tenure) Ph.D. (or equivalent doctoral degree) scholars in neuroscience-related fields; (2) US citizens or Permanent Residents; and (3) interested in academic neuroscience or neuroscience-related careers. We encourage applications from individuals whose participation will contribute to the mission of the BRAINS program to enhance diversity. Please see https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-20-031.html for more information on NIH?s Interest in Diversity. Applications will be accepted through 11 pm (PT) on April 18, 2024. What happens when a person knows two languages that operate in different modalities: a spoken language, like English or Spanish, and a signed language, like American Sign Language or Spanish Sign Language? This is a rare form of bilingualism ? relatively few people get the opportunity to learn a sign language ? but one that raises all sorts of questions about how language is shaped by its modality, and how this impacts the way that language is represented in the brain. In this talk, I will review a series of studies that we have carried out with bimodal bilinguals of Spanish and Spanish Sign Language, using a variety of techniques (behavioural, eye-tracking and magnetoencephaolography-MEG). The results demonstrate that, on the one hand, bimodal bilinguals show the same underlying mechanisms of language representation and control as common-or-garden spoken language bilinguals, while, on the other hand, differences between speech and sign translate into differences in how each language is processed by the brain, highlighting that modality does indeed shape language structure and representation. > > Zoom link: https://dartmouth.zoom.us/j/92366533850?pwd=T3NNOHJLcDhBekREaFNQV2VkeGpTQT09 > Please follow ICN on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter and subscribe to receive announcements. > > > Best regards, > Erica Busch, Omri Raccah, and Sam McDougle > On behalf of the Innovators in Cognitive Neuroscience Organizing Committee > > > ---- > Erica L. I am writing on behalf of a group of early-career researchers working in NeuroAI. Given recent high-profile calls for greater training in NeuroAI, we are conducting a short survey for NeuroAI trainees, to understand how they can best be supported in their development, and what challenges they face. Our hope is to use the results to support a peer-reviewed publication, written by trainees and for trainees, that will also inform educational offerings in neuroscience, AI, and their intersection. Yale's Wu Tsai Institute, due its explicit focus on NeuroComputation and Machine Intelligence, has come to our attention as one of the most prominent institutions where neuroscience and AI converge - and where many current or prospective NeuroAI trainees may be working. So, we kindly ask for your help in disseminating this survey to current and recent trainees in your institution, by sharing it through internal communications (internal bulletins, mailing list) for students, postdocs and early career researchers. However, please *do not* share on publicly accessible social media channels, to avoid bots. The survey is quick and entirely anonymous. Anyone who is interested in the intersection of neuro and AI in some way and is a current or recent trainee (student/postdoc/RA/early industry position) is invited to take part. We hope that you will help us to achieve our goal of improving the experience of NeuroAI trainees, by helping us to give a voice to as many trainees as possible. Any data representation -- as long as it does not contain personally identifying information -- is eligible if the submitter believes the work is artistic or conveys meaning beyond the information encoded in the data itself. Consider submitting a data representation born from a mistake but that led to something aesthetically beautiful. If you're passionate about merging science and art, this call is for you! Transforming visual experiences into adaptive long-term memories Abstract: Long-term memory allows humans to exploit information encountered in the past in order to behave more adaptively in the present. However, our memories are not perfect snapshots of our perceptual experiences. My research explores the cognitive and neural pressures that shape what sensory information is stored in long-term memory and how this information is stored in a way that benefits later behavior. In my talk, I will highlight a series of fMRI experiments that seek to determine (i) how the visual content of memory is actively molded by competing memories, task factors, and intrinsic neural architecture; and (ii) how these memory transformations promote adaptive behavior. Together, these experiments highlight the diverse pressures on human visual memory and how they combine to produce a system that is flexible, efficient, and adaptive. Zoom link? Friday, September 20th, 2024 Dear Yale neuroscience community, The Kavli Institute for Neuroscience is organizing a special symposium on September 20th, 2024, to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The symposium will feature talks from renowned external speakers, Yale faculty, and Yale trainees across different subfields of neuroscience: molecular and cellular neuroscience, disease, systems neuroscience/behavior, computational neuroscience, and development. We are delighted to invite nominations for trainee (graduate student and postdoc) speakers at the symposium. The symposium provides a prestigious platform for emerging scholars to share their research during this special event, which highlights the impactful neuroscience research done at Yale and beyond. Each talk will be 15 minutes, followed by 5 minutes of questions and discussion. Eligibility We welcome nominations for trainees (graduate students, postdocs, ARS) who are currently engaged in neuroscience research at Yale. One trainee will be selected per highlighted subfield of neuroscience. To ensure representation of different labs, trainees who are in the lab of confirmed Yale faculty speakers are not eligible. The confirmed Yale faculty speakers are Pietro De Camilli, Marina Picciotto, Smita Krishnaswamy, Sreeganga Chandra, and Nenad Sestan. Nomination Process Trainees may be nominated by their mentors (PI), or they may nominate themselves. To submit a nomination, please complete this survey, and send a CV by email to pauline.charbogne at yale.edu by June 1st, 2024. In the case of self-nomination, a letter of support from the trainee's PI is required (please send to the same email address). Important Dates ? Nomination Deadline: June 1st ? Symposium: September 20th We look forward to celebrating the groundbreaking work of the Yale neuroscience community with you during this very special event!
