On behalf of the Developmental Area Colloquium crew, Nicoló, Zihan, and I would like to welcome you all to join us Friday, September 13th at 11:30AM for our first colloquium speaker of the year.

Dr. Lars Chittka<https://chittkalab.sbcs.qmul.ac.uk/Lars.html> from Queen Mary, University of London will be visiting our department and giving his lecture titled "The Mind of a Bee". Please see below for more details:

Time: 11:30AM - 12:45PM
Location: Room 1116 (11th Floor, 100 College)
The lecture will be followed by a reception with the speaker. Food and drinks will be provided.

Talk Title: The Mind of a Bee
Abstract: Most of us are aware of the hive mind—the power of bees as an amazing collective. But do we know how uniquely intelligent bees are as individuals?  I argue that they have remarkable navigational abilities, can recognize not just flowers but also human faces, exhibit basic emotions, count, use simple tools, solve problems, and learn by observing others. They may even possess consciousness. I illustrate how bee brains are unparalleled in the animal kingdom in terms of how much computing power is packed into their tiny nervous systems. I examine the psychological differences between bees and the ethical dilemmas that arise in conservation and laboratory settings because bees might feel and think.
