Miller, April 9th, 2:00 PM " Cognition Emerges from Neural Dynamics" Message-ID: We are thrilled to announce an upcoming session of our neuro-philosophy seminar series featuring *Professor Earl K. Miller *from the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory and Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, at MIT. ?? Talk Title: Cognition Emerges from Neural Dynamics ? Date: Wednesday April 9th, 2025 ? Time: 2:00 - 3:00 PM ? Location: 100 College Street, Room 1116 *About the Speaker: *Earl K. Miller is a Picower Professor of Neuroscience at MIT. His laboratory investigates the neural mechanisms underlying high-level cognitive functions, particularly executive functions such as working memory, attention, and decision making, with significant focus on the prefrontal cortex. Alongside his groundbreaking empirical work, Professor Miller is recognized for advancing influential theories on how cognitive control is implemented in the brain, emphasizing the role of neural oscillations in coordinating neuronal activity. *About the Talk: *Classic models likened brain function to neuron networks, like telegraph systems. Emerging evidence, however, suggests higher cognition relies on rhythmic oscillations or "brain waves" at the electric field level. This expands functionality, with "telegraph wires" also producing "radio waves" (electric fields) that rapidly spread influence. These fields may facilitate large-scale organization, enabling executive control and possibly energy-efficient analog computing. Looking forward to seeing you there! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There is also considerable hype surrounding AI and many concerns (some justified, some not) regarding the use of this type of technology. This discussion-based seminar will 1) provide undergraduate students across disciplines with a broad overview of issues related to AI in medicine at a non-technical level, drawing on perspectives from the interpretive/humanistic social sciences, computing, engineering, and healthcare and 2) model interdisciplinary communication and build a robust framework for collaboration. Overarching topics, grounded in medical case studies, include what it means for computers to ?think? and how we understand what they are thinking about; the use and limits of scientific knowledge in making policy decisions; bias, fairness, equity, equality; the challenges of implementation of AI systems; safety and risk; and the human/computer interface. The course will also provide a high level overview of machine learning, discussing opportunities, limitations, and tradeoffs. Ultimately, the course offers a grounded look at how AI is being discussed and deployed on the ground in medicine, equipping students with a critical lens for thinking about responsible and practical implementation and innovation when it comes to AI. The Canvas link is here: SOCY 2048 01 (FA25): AI, Medicine, and Society. We are also working on a textbook for the class. The intro chapter is on Canvas for anyone who is curious to know more. In complex environments where experience is sparse relative to the multitude of features, agents must efficiently generalize by focusing on features relevant for the task. The generalization strategy, known as inductive bias, shapes the dynamics of learning. We introduce a neural kernel framework to characterize inductive biases of humans and artificial neural networks in category learning, linking neural representations with learning behavior. Our kernel models captured the learning trajectories of human subjects across two experiments, and elucidated the learning strategies of neural networks through feature modes. We developed methods for fitting kernels to behavioral data, revealing the adaptation of inductive bias in human subjects. We also implemented a neural network model with feature-based gain modulation, capable of adapting representations and inductive bias. In summary, we established a novel perspective for understanding learning and generalization in relation to neural representations, providing testable predictions for future neural and behavioral experiments. She investigates the diverse types of causes and explanatory frameworks that underpin scientific understanding in these fields. Dr. Ross's work has been recognized with prestigious awards, including a National Science Foundation CAREER award, a Humboldt Experienced Researcher Fellowship, and a John Templeton Foundation Grant. She is also the author of the forthcoming book Explanation in Biology (Cambridge University Press). *About the talk: *This talk explores topics in causation at the intersection of philosophy and neuroscience. In the field of neuroscience, ?mechanism? is commonly invoked as a causal standard?in publication guidelines, grant calls, and claims about the field?s aims?however, ?mechanism? remains challenging to define and distinguish from other causal concepts such as circuits, pathways, constraints, and others. This talk aims to make progress on these topics by (i) examining the ?circuit? concept in neuroscience, (ii) exploring some philosophical basics of causation, and (iii) using both to outline ways of addressing outstanding challenges in the causation space. Professor Lauren N. Ross is an Associate Professor in the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of California, Irvine. We?ll be discussing her recent work on the lessons we can learn from the complexity of psychiatric genetics. Dinner will be provided at the end of our meeting, we hope to see you there! ?? Paper: 'Explanation in Contexts of Causal Complexity: Lessons from Psychiatric Genetics' ? Date: Wednesday April 23th, 2025 ? Time: 5:30 - 6:30 PM ? Location: 100 College Street, Room 1135 Abstract: Over the past decade there have been increasingly common claims that psychiatry is in a crisis. These claims often target the lack of known or identifiable causal etiologies for psychiatric diseases, suggesting that they are among the most intractable enigmas in medicine. While the intractable nature of these disorders is often associated with their causal complexity, it is not always clear exactly what is meant by this. How should we understand causal complexity in this domain? How does it challenge scientific efforts to understand and explain these diseases? This paper addresses these questions by examining two main types of causal complexity in psychiatry. My analysis clarifies what these types of causal complexity are, how they challenge efforts to understand and explain these disorders, and how scientists are working to overcome these challenges. At the core of FV4000 is a proprietary SilVIR detector (US Patent No. US11237047B2) that can achieve lower noise, higher sensitivity, higher dynamic range, and improved photon resolving capabilities in time than the previous technology it's based on, the silicon photomultiplier (or SiPM), thanks to an integrated circuit containing a digital signal processor and a gigahertz analog-to-digital converter. The only way to confirm is to try it out with real samples! The demo system configuration will include 6 spectral SilVIR detectors, 10 laser lines (including NIR, an additional feature of SilVIR), and objectives for a wide range of applications on our IX83 inverted microscope platform. Location: 100 College Street, Room 1167 *About the Speaker: *Professor Lauren N. Ross is an Associate Professor in the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of California, Irvine. She received her Ph.D. from the History and Philosophy of Science Department at the University of Pittsburgh, a M.A. in bioethics from the Center for Bioethics and Health Law at the University of Pittsburgh, and a M.D. from the University of California, Irvine She investigates the diverse types of causes and explanatory frameworks that underpin scientific understanding in these fields. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This class will explore the idea that data has shape at multiple levels, and accounting for the shape leads to improvements in machine learning based inference from data. First we will model the shape of data using data geometry, which involves modeling data as graphs and higher order objects such as simplicial complexes. We will show that such models help derive meaningful embeddings of the data (Laplacian eigenmaps, diffusion maps, tSNE, UMAP, PHATE), clustering (community detection, spectral clustering), trajectories (diffusion components, pseudotime). We will then delve into the underpinnings of these graphs as discretization of Riemannian manifolds, and introduce ideas from Riemannian manifolds such as the metric tensor, geodesics, volume, Levi-Civita connection, curvature, volume. We then go back to data to show how neural networks can help translate these concepts directly to data via implicit continuous models they make of discrete data. Here we discuss recent deep learning techniques such as Riemannian flow matching, Neural FIM, GAGA that incorporate core ideas from Riemannian geometry, particularly in generative modeling. We will also cover applications in computational biology and neuroscience. The class will also involve a final research project.
