LASCON 2026 offers an intensive four-week training program designed for graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and early-career researchers interested in applying computational and mathematical methods to the study of neurons and neural networks. The curriculum spans multiple scales of brain modeling?from biophysically detailed neurons to large-scale networks and theoretical frameworks of brain function and dysfunction?and covers topics such as extracellular field modeling, synaptic and structural plasticity, brain disease and brain state modeling, artificial intelligence, criticality in brain dynamics, consciousness, and brain?machine interfaces. The program combines morning lectures on theory, afternoon tutorials using leading simulation tools (NEURON, NEST, NetPyNE), and evening group project work, culminating in student project presentations. This 10th edition marks a special milestone: 20 years of LASCON. Since its first edition in 2006, the school has become a recognized international initiative in computational neuroscience training, attracting students from Latin America and beyond. Over the years, LASCON has welcomed participants from all continents, and its alumni (278 to date) have gone on to successful careers in academia and industry worldwide. In particular, his work shows that the hippocampus dramatically differentiates neural codes specifically when the potential for memory interference is high. He will discuss why and when this occurs and how these findings challenge existing theories. Please join us! Cochlear implantation (CI) in prelingually deafened children has been an effective intervention for language and reading development. However, a substantial subset of children with CIs continue to experience difficulties in these domains, necessitating a deeper understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying variability in outcomes. The talk will discuss findings from EEG and fNIRS data in 75 children where we focused on the neural substrates of language and reading abilities in children with CIs. Findings highlight a complex interplay between neural reorganization and language-reading outcomes in children with CIs. Crucially, early intervention and hearing age emerged as critical determinants of reading success, though early auditory deprivation still imposed lasting constraints. In some sense we have all the information, but even estimating something like the frequency of a given rare token might require many forward passes. In this talk I discuss approximate techniques for answering these questions, often in manners much more computationally efficient than blindly producing forward passes. I discuss how these techniques shed light not only on what neural networks do on a given input, but why they do it.
