Subject: 2026 NINDS Landis Award for Outstanding Mentorship Prize Competition
[Against a black background is a sagittal cross section of the rodent brain that is fluorescently labeled with multiple markers. Text “The NINDS Landis Award for Outstanding Mentorship”. Right, an image of Dr. Story Landis (a white woman with chin-length gray hair and blue eyes. She is smiling and wearing glasses and a purple blazer).]
As researchers, we often acknowledge the important role that our mentors have in guiding us, but these mentorship achievements are rarely incentivized in tangible ways. To recognize the contributions and importance of outstanding mentors, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has established the NINDS Landis Award for Outstanding Mentorship, named in honor of former NINDS Director Dr. Story Landis, for her exceptional influence on scientific research and mentorship. Now in its ninth year, NINDS is seeking nominations for this year’s award. Nominations are due on April 24, 2026, and can be submitted by current or former mentees using this form<https://forms.cloud.microsoft/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=eHW3FHOX1UKFByUcotwrBiNPe1IzOhJIqs8DZbmG3HJURDBWSlpHMThDOTBHSEJNTlUzQjBTVlBBQi4u&route=shorturl>.
The Landis Award<https://www.ninds.nih.gov/Funding/About-Funding/landis-award-for-outstanding-mentorship> provides $100,000 to support selected investigators’ efforts to foster the career advancement of trainees. Nominations will only be accepted from a nominee’s current or former mentees. This year, we seek nominations for established faculty mentors who are more than 20 years from the start of their first tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions (i.e., started their first tenure-track position in calendar year 2005 or earlier).
Of note, this year’s Landis Award will be administered through a Prize Competition mechanism<https://www.nih.gov/challenges/ninds-landis-award-outstanding-mentorship> (as opposed to an administrative supplement as in prior years). Please see this webpage<https://www.ninds.nih.gov/funding/about-funding/types-research-support/achievement-awards/ninds-landis-award-outstanding-mentorship-ninds-investigator> for more information.
Best,
