Subject: [Neuroscience] [INP_general] Information about Yale Neuroscience Summer Scholars (YNSS) Program

Information from Gina Della Porta:

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to invite your participation as a Mentor and/or Speaker for the Yale Neuroscience Summer Scholars (YNSS) Program, which launched last year with support from an NIH R25 award and the Department of Pathology. YNSS provides paid 8-week summer laboratory placements for students from local high schools. The students will each complete a neuroscience-focused project, and they will present their work at a special event on Saturday, August 22nd. YNSS funds will cover educational stipends for participating students as well as a small amount of supplies. YNSS plans to accept six students for the summer of 2026; student assignments will be dependent on the applicant pool, so it is possible your lab will not be assigned a student this year, but we will make every effort to recruit a suitable student. Note that any student project with a focus on the brain, including brain metastasis, could be considered for this program.

As we prepare to launch the student application process for Summer 2026, we would greatly appreciate your lab’s participation. If you are interested in hosting a high school student intern this summer, please send the following information to gina.dellaporta at yale.edu<mailto:gina.dellaporta at yale.edu> by January 30th:

  1. Description of student project (template attached)

     * Ensure this project is relevant to neuroscience and can be completed by a high school student with appropriate guidance
     * The students will be rising 11th and 12th graders, so it is fine to list advanced coursework such as Chemistry or Precalculus as a preferred prerequisite if applicable

  1. Name of an individual from your laboratory who, in addition to yourself, will supervise the day-to-day activities of the high school student during their 8-week placement

     * This can be a graduate student, ARS, or other individual with the appropriate skill set
     * This individual will be required to complete additional mentor training that will be offered by the Poorvu Center for the YNSS program

In addition to laboratory placements, we are also seeking faculty, students, and trainees who are willing to offer presentations on neuroscience-related topics for the students at their weekly workshops this summer. If you would like to give a presentation, send an email to gina.dellaporta at yale.edu<mailto:gina.dellaporta at yale.edu>.

Please contact me or the YNSS Co-Directors (Drs. Chen Liu and Pallavi Gopal) if you have any questions.

Thank you,
Gina
