[WTI-trainee] New SmartSPIM Light-Sheet Microscope Now Available for Training and Use

Dear all,
We are pleased to announce the arrival at NeuroLux of a LifeCanvas SmartSPIM light-sheet microscope, acquired in response to community needs identified through user surveys and ongoing discussions. The instrument is designed for imaging large cleared specimens, including organoids, whole brains, and other internal organs of small mammals. The system can accommodate samples with a maximum lateral dimension of 40 mm x 65 mm. It can also be used for imaging expanded samples and, in certain applications, live specimens where ultra-high acquisition speed and environmental control are not required.
This microscope is equipped with 445, 488, 561, and 642 nm lasers and 1.6×, 3.6×, and 9× objectives with numerical apertures (NA) of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3, respectively. For most applications, the 3.6× objective is expected to be the primary workhorse, providing cellular-level resolution while maintaining efficient imaging throughput. The 1.6× objective is well suited for rapid imaging of entire specimens and large-scale surveys, whereas the 9× objective offers the higher resolution required for applications such as resolving bundled neurites and other fine structural details.
As with any imaging system, higher resolution comes with trade-offs, including increased acquisition time and larger data volumes. For reference, imaging an entire mouse brain with the 3.6× objective typically takes approximately one hour and generates about 150 GB of data per fluorescence channel.
Training requests are now being accepted. Before scheduling training, users are required to prepare and bring at least one cleared or expanded sample of their own. While operating this microscope can be learned relatively quickly, sample preparation for light-sheet imaging often requires substantial time and effort. Requiring a ready sample helps ensure that users can move directly from training to independent use of the instrument with minimal delay.
