New Haven Writer Publishes First Novel
What: Mark Saba reading from and signing copies of his novel, The
Landscapes of Pater

About The Book: The Landscapes of Pater is a poetic story in which the
main character (Nick Pater) has recurrent dreams of his Mediterranean
roots, and searches through friends and relatives for clues to his
identity, his true self. His father died when he was very young, but
Nick cannot escape from this male image. Other important characters in
the book include an eccentric university chancellor, one of the pledges
in Nick's fraternity, and a crazed uncle. Nick ends up taking a trip
to Sardinia, where he discovers his roots and finds the answers to many
questions about himself.
About The Author: Mark Saba grew up in Pittsburgh, where he studied
pharmacy at the University of Pittsburgh before transferring to
Wesleyan University, where he began to write. Subsequently he received
an M.A. from hollins University, where he won an award from the Academy
of American Poets as well as the Andrew James Purdy fiction award. His
stories, poems, and essays have appeared widely in literary magazines
and anthologies, including Confrontation, Phantasmagoria, The Midnight
Mind, The Connecticut River Review, The Yale Italian poetry Review, and
Fiction. In 1996, his epic oem, "Judith of the Light," won a prize and
was published by the Mellen Poetry Press. The Landscapes of Pater is
his first published novel. He works at the Yale University School of
Medicine as Manager of Graphics & Photography.
