>Born in Dublin in 1944, Eavan Boland is one of Ireland’s premier 
>contemporary poetic voices. Her ten books of poetry­including this year’s

>Water: Collected Poems 1967-87 ­ document the challenges of modern 
>identity, filtered through lenses of Irish history, femininity, and the 
>trials of the everyday. In her poem “The Pomegranate,” Boland movingly 
>writes of her first encounter with the Eurydice myth as “an exiled child 
>in the crackling dust of/ the underworld, the stars blighted.” She has 
>taught at Bowdoin and Washington University, and has been Writer in
