Janice Tatter Chapbook Release
Janice will read from her new chapbook, COMMUNION OF VOICES. She is receipient of Alma K. Daughtery Award for excellence in literature. In 2006, REMEMBERING THE TRUTH was published by Temenos Publishing Company. She's been published in several journals such as Southern Hum, Red River Review, Poesia, Up the Staircase, Alimentum, Muscadine Lines: A Southern Journal, and many others.
Apple Valley Review called Communion of Voices "a collection of subtle, fine-boned poetry" and James Marsh, author of Snapshots of Vietnam, said, "Janice dares to expose her heart, and pour out her soul with vivid description." According to Paula Martin Morell, publisher and author of Broken Water, the "hauntingly beautiful, sacred imagery" of Communion of Voices has the familiarity of a shadowy, candlelit sanctuary into which "we are pulled back again and again." Boston Literary Magazine praised Janice's "willingness to be vulnerable... and her fascination with the dynamics of those closest to her, from her parents to the family servant, Locke. The poems in Communion of Voices speak of hard-hitting realities like 1950s racism and sexual awareness, all the while treating human frailties with compassion and humor."
On a personal note, working with Janice has been an exhilarating journey into her complex psyche. Her fine writing and her passion for presenting excellent verse has made her one of WOM's favorite poets. We are excited to share Communion of Voices with you.
Richard Tietjen Memorial Reading
We will be remembering our friend Richard Tietjen and will celebrate his life and poetry by holding a memorial reading of his verse. We will read poems that Richard had selected for a poetry reading that he had scheduled.
Richard's courageous 14 year fight against lymphoma was remarkable and strengthened his own compassion towards family, friends, and the world. He had a gentle departure on April 20th.
Richard gives us a brief glance at his story in his own words, below:
I think poetry captures snapshots, cross-sections of time and space that are more enduring than mere photographs. The dictum "Ideas only in things" has ruled my practice for the longest time. Lately, I've realized that poetry must assert imaginative realities that can't quite be encompassed in ordinary language.
After a number of years cutting down trees and building things from wood, I then worked as a programmer in the educational publishing industry for 20 years. In 2004 I devoted my energies to writing poems that have appeared in Caduceus, the Connecticut River Review, and on this Kitchen Ink website, (http://kitchen-ink.org<http://kitchen-ink.org/>). I read at many poetry events in New Haven and up the Connecticut Shoreline. I inhabit Guilford, CT where I practice both poetry and textual programming and belong to the Guilford Poets Guild, Shoreline Greenway Trail, and Guilford Peace Alliance.
