JOYCE MAYNARD
Memoirist and novelist
6:30 p.m., Thursday, April 2
Pierson Common Room
The summer after her freshman year, Joyce Maynard left Yale to live with J.D. Salinger, the reclusive author of Catcher in the Rye. She was 18; he was 54. Everything about the relationship was controversial, including the memoir she wrote after keeping it secret for more than two decades. Maynard will read from that memoir, as well as from "An 18-Year-Old Looks Back on Life" and from more recent work. Then she'll answer questions. The event has been scheduled early in the evening so that students who are involved in pre-tap activities can attend.
