The Contemporary Poetry Colloquium and the Working Group in Contemporary Cultures invite you to a talk by Andrea Brady, Professor of Poetry at Queen Mary University of London, entitled, "Poetry and Bondage (Wyatt to Halpern)" on Monday, April 4, at 3:30pm in Linsly-Chittenden Hall, Room 209. Tim Kreiner, a Lecturer in the English Department, and Clio Doyle, a second year Ph.D. student in English, will each provide a response to Professor Brady's essay. The discussion will be moderated by Caleb Smith, Professor of English and Director of Graduate Studies.
Professor Brady will also be reading from her own poetry as part of the Graduate Poets Reading Series on Monday, April 4 at 8:00pm in Linsly-Chittenden Hall, Room 319. Maryam Ivette Parhizkar, a Ph.D. student in African American Studies and American Studies, and Joshua Stanley, a Ph.D. candidate in English Literature, will serve as Professor Brady's opening acts.
Andrea Brady’s books of poetry include Vacation of a Lifetime (Salt, 2001), Wildfire: A Verse Essay on Obscurity and Illumination (Krupskaya, 2010), Mutability: scripts for infancy (Seagull, 2012), Cut from the Rushes (Reality Street, 2013) and Dompteuse (Bookthug, 2014). She was born in Philadelphia and is now Professor of Poetry at Queen Mary University of London, where she runs the Centre for Poetry. She has published widely on poetry and poetics, ritual, embodiment, theories of the imagination, women’s writing, and critical theory; she is currently writing a book, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, on poetry and constraint across several historical periods. Scholarly works include English Funerary Elegy in the Seventeenth Century: Laws in Mourning (Palgrave Macmillan, 2006). Maryam Ivette Parhizkar is a writer, musician, and scholar interested in sound, resonance, migration, family myths, and finding ways to use them to work through the constraints of the English language. A chapbook, Pull: a ballad (2014) was published by The Operating System, and another, As for the future—on repetition and feedback in the resonant works of Sun Ra and Clarice Lispector—is available from Portable Press at Yo-Yo Labs in April 2016. Recent and forthcoming work can also be found online in Brooklyn Rail, Gesture, and Labor Poetic Labor! (curated by Jill Magi for Essay Press). She is a first-year Ph.D. student studying African American Studies and American Studies at Yale. Prior to doctoral work, she served as managing editor of Litmus Press. Born and raised in Houston, TX, by Iranian and Salvadoran immigrant parents, she has lived and worked in the NYC area for the last decade.
Josh Stanley is the author of four chapbooks, most recently A Story, published by Defector Press. His poems have been anthologized in Better Than Language and appeared in journals including The Claudius App, Damn the Caesars and Cambridge Literary Review. He used to edit the magazine Hot Gun! and was one of the editors of Grasp Press. He is a PhD candidate in the English Department at Yale.
