Dear poetry lovers:
We're very excited to announce the finale of the spring season of the Yale Graduate Poets Reading Series: this Thursday, April 27, at 5:30pm in Linsly-Chittenden Hall, Room 211, we will be joined by Charif Shanahan, Cave Canem fellow, Crab Orchard Series in Poetry First Book Award winner, Fulbright Morocco fellow, and Wallace Stegner fellow at Stanford University. He will be reading from his book Into Each Room We Enter Without Knowing, about which Yusef Komunyakaa writes, "Here in these pages the politics of color is highly personal; in a time of bleaching creams and psychological erasures, where there’s an attempt to diminish the African, this poet confronts himself and family head-on, and in doing so, through wit and an astute sense of history, his poetry dares to affect the reader.”
Brandon Menke, a Ph.D. candidate in English, will serve as Charif’s opening act.
Charif Shanahan is the author of Into Each Room We Enter without Knowing (SIU Press, 2017), winner of the 2015 Crab Orchard Series in Poetry First Book Award. His poems and translations have appeared in numerous publications, including Baffler, Boston Review, Callaloo, Literary Hub, New Republic, Poetry International, Prairie Schooner, and A Public Space. A Puschart Prize nominee, he is the recipient of awards and fellowships from the Academy of American Poets, the Cave Canem Foundation, the Frost Place, the Fulbright Program/IIE, Millay Colony for the Arts, and Stanford University, where he is a Wallace Stegner Fellow in Poetry. Born and raised in the Bronx to an Irish-American father and a Moroccan mother, Charif has extensive international experience and has lived in Argentina, Italy, Morocco, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. From 2012-2015, Charif was Programs Director of the Poetry Society of America. Charif has taught creative writing, literature, and language at Dartmouth College, the Collegio di Milano (Italy), International House (Europe, North America), New York University, and Stanford University.
Brandon Menke is a poet and Ph.D. candidate in English Literature at Yale University. Before coming to Yale, he received his BA in English and Creative Writing from Washington University in St. Louis and his MFA in Poetry from NYU, where he served as the Poetry Editor of Washington Square Review. His dissertation examines queer identities, lyric form, and regionalist aesthetics in 20th-century American literature and visual art. Currently, Brandon is at work on a book project with artists Kyle Goldbach and Martin Bek, and he serves as the Co-Editor-in-Chief and Poetry Editor of Palimpest: Yale Graduate Literary & Arts Magazine.
