We are thrilled to invite you to our final Yale Graduate Poets Reading Series event of the semester:
TONIGHT at 6:30pm in Linsly-Chittenden Hall, Room 319, we will be joined by the talented Emily Skillings! Skillings will be reading from her exquisite début collection Fort Not, out last month from The Song Cave. The late John Ashbery hailed the collection as a “staggeringly beautiful, wildly off-kilter account of daily life [ . . . ] a savagely brilliant debut.” Emily will be joined by two fabulous graduate poets: Maryam Parhizkar, a Ph.D. student in African American Studies and American Studies, and Michael Abraham, a Ph.D. student in English Literature.
Emily Skillings is the author of the poetry collection Fort Not (The Song Cave, 2017), which Publishers Weekly called a “fabulously eccentric, hypnotic, and hypervigilant debut,” as well as two chapbooks, Backchannel (Poor Claudia) and Linnaeus: The 26 Sexual Practices of Plants (No, Dear/ Small Anchor Press). Recent poems can be found/are forthcoming in Poetry, Harper’s, Boston Review, Brooklyn Rail, BOMB, Hyperallergic, LitHub, and jubilat. Skillings is a member of the Belladonna* Collaborative, a feminist poetry collective, small press, and event series. She received her MFA from Columbia University, where she was a Creative Writing Teaching Fellow. She splits her time between Brooklyn and Hudson, NY.
Michael J. Abraham is a first-year PhD student in the English department at Yale University. His research interests include modern poetics; race, gender, and sexuality studies; and post-Enlightenment formulations of reason and irrationality in Anglophone literature and philosophy. His poetry has appeared in The Minetta Review and Sundog Lit. He lives in New Haven with his partner, Marco, and their anxious cat, Alfie.
Maryam Ivette Parhizkar is a poet, musician, scholar and author of two chapbooks: Pull: a ballad (The Operating System, 2014) and As For the Future (Portable Press at Yo-Yo Labs, 2016). Her recent writing has appeared in Amerarcana/Shuffle Boil, Bone Bouquet, The Recluse and other places in the small press/digital sphere. She an editorial board member of Litmus Press and a Ph.D. student in African American Studies and American Studies at Yale University.
We’ll have copies of Fort Not available for purchase at the reading.
