Dear friends and colleagues:
The Yale Graduate Poets Reading Series and Kundiman are proud to present a special Yale Series of Younger Poets Prize Reading by Duy Doan and Yanyi. Grad poet Catalina Ouyang will serve as our opening reader.
Please join us on Friday, October 12 at 4:30pm in the Ezra Stiles College Common Room to hear these exciting poets read from their collections We Play a Game and The Year of Blue Water, which were selected by Carl Phillips as the winners, respectively, of the 2017 and 2018 Yale Series of Younger Poets Prize, administered by Yale University Press. This event is co-sponsored by the Asian American Cultural Center and the Race and Innovative Poetics Working Group.
The Yale Series of Younger Poets champions the most promising new American poets. Awarded since 1919, the Yale Younger Poets prize is the oldest annual literary award in the United States. Past winners include Muriel Rukeyser, Adrienne Rich, William Meredith, W.S. Merwin, John Ashbery, John Hollander, James Tate, and Carolyn Forché. Louise Glück was the judge of the Series from 2003-2010, and Carl Phillips is the current judge.
DUY DOAN is the author of We Play a Game, winner of the 2017 Yale Series of Younger Poets Prize. His work has appeared in Poetry, Slate, The Cortland Review, and elsewhere. A Kundiman fellow, he received his MFA in poetry from Boston University. A recipient of awards from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the St. Botolph Club Foundation, Duy has taught at Boston University, Lesley University, and the Boston Conservatory. He is the director of the Favorite Poem Project, which celebrates the role of poetry in the lives of Americans. He lives in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts.
YANYI is a poet and critic. In 2018, he won the Yale Series of Younger Poets Prize, awarded by Carl Phillips, for his first book, The Year of Blue Water (Yale University Press 2019). Currently, he is an associate editor at Foundry and an MFA candidate at New York University. He formerly served as Director of Technology and Design at The Brooklyn Institute for Social Research, senior editor at Nat. Brut, and curatorial assistant at The Poetry Project. He is the recipient of fellowships from Asian American Writers Workshop and Poets House. Find his recent work in LA Review of Books, VIDA, and Memorious.
CATALINA OUYANG is a visual artist and child of the Chinese diaspora by way(s) of St. Louis, New Jersey and Illinois. Her work culls from mythologies and neoliberal detritus to reimagine forms of contract-making, punishment, retribution and self-definition. Her visual work has been exhibited internationally and her writing has received two Puschart Prize nominations. She is a 2019 MFA candidate in Sculpture at Yale University.
We’ll have copies of We Play a Game available for purchase at the reading.
