The Twenty-Third Annual
WALLACE STEVENS BIRTHDAY BASH
Saturday, November 3, 2018, 2:00pm
Center for Contemporary Culture
Hartford Public Library

Featuring guest speaker—
COLE SWENSEN
“Perhaps the Truth Depends”

Cole Swensen considers the age-old question of the relationship between writing and walking, finding no new answers but a few new avenues of pursuit through close—though flighty—readings of some of Stevens references to walking.

Cole Swensen (www.coleswensen.com<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.coleswensen.com%2F&data=02%7C01%7Cnancy.kuhl%40yale.edu%7C5c8a71061b6b422fe53f08d6387e767e%7Cdd8cbebb21394df8b4114e3e87abeb5c%7C0%7C0%7C636758513143271641&sdata=M4Gow3ktEZbXWnw4McKt3UWYllhWjhZ7Jll3WHQD4Js%3D&reserved=0>) is the author of seventeen collections of poetry, most recently On Walking On (Nightboat, 2017), Gave (Omnidawn, 2017), and Landscapes on a Train (Nightboat 2015), and a volume of critical essays. Her poetic collections often turn around specific research projects, including ones on public parks, visual art, illuminated manuscripts, and ghosts. Her work has won the National Poetry Series, the Iowa Poetry Prize, the San Francisco State Poetry Center Book Award, and the PEN USA Award in Literary Translation. A 2006 Guggenheim Fellow, she is the co-editor of the 2009 Norton anthology American Hybrid and the founding editor of La Presse Poetry (www.lapressepoetry.com<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.lapressepoetry.com%2F&data=02%7C01%7Cnancy.kuhl%40yale.edu%7C5c8a71061b6b422fe53f08d6387e767e%7Cdd8cbebb21394df8b4114e3e87abeb5c%7C0%7C0%7C636758513143271641&sdata=WrIwsaOF%2FYcHCJLPOIxHKCwvUqbDorFvVQ8QwZNJQfk%3D&reserved=0>). She teaches at Brown University.

This festive and illuminating event will begin with a reception of wine and hors d’oeuvres, followed by Cole Swensen’s presentation, and will conclude with a book signing, birthday cake and champagne!
