JOIN US Thursday, January 23 at 5:30 pm at the Yale University Art Gallery for a reading from Alice Oswald's Memorial. Experience Oswald's Memorial: A Version of Homer's Iliad as performed by students in Yale's Directed Studies program, the Department of Classics, and others. Published in 2011, Memorial is a radical poetic reworking of the Iliad. A classicist and an award-winning British poet, Oswald translates the Iliad by omitting seven eighths of Homer's narrative. Oswald distills the epic into passages of exceptional beauty and starkness, moments of soldiers' deaths, and similes. The reading is staged among the sculptures of the Yale University Art Gallery's ancient sculpture hall. Poster attached.
