Jiayang Fan is a staff writer for The New Yorker, to which she has contributed personal essays, cultural and political commentary, and food criticism (including a memorable essay on what makes disgusting foods disgusting). Fan was born in Chongqing and immigrated to the United States when she was seven. She is currently writing a memoir, titled Motherland, on her relationship with her mother, a doctor who became a housekeeper in the U.S. in order to support her daughter.
