[yul-naco] Yale NACO Policy Documents

Dear NACO catalogers:

The following two documents have just been posted on the NACO section of 
the "Authority Control at Yale" website:

1. Yale Policies for NACO Name Authority Records (new)
http://www.library.yale.edu/cataloging/authorities/names_policy.htm

2. Yale Policies for NACO Series Authority Records (minor revisions)
http://www.library.yale.edu/cataloging/authorities/series_policy.htm

These documents contain our local Yale policies for:

-when and where to create new NACO records
-when and where to update existing NACO records
-when to import NACO records

They supplement (rather than replace) all of the standard national-level 
NACO policies and procedures that you learned during NACO training and 
consult regularly in AACR2, the LCRIs, the NACO Participant's Manual, 
MARC21, DCM Z1, the PCC website, etc.

Please look over these documents (they are not long) and let me know if you 
have any questions. These local NACO policies do not represent any real 
change in how we do things, but many of the policies were issued piecemeal 
over the years so we've tried to consolidate them and organize them in a 
consistent way.

Note that some fields are optional in NACO records (e.g., 043, 053, 781) - 
the PCC leaves it up to individual institutions to decide whether or not 
their catalogers should include these fields in their NACO records. In 
general, we have refrained from requiring you to include these fields. You 
may make the decision for yourself, whether across the board or on a 
case-by-case basis. If you do decide to include one of these fields, make 
sure to consult the proper documentation (we've indicated where you should 
look - e.g., you will need to look in subject cataloging documentation to 
make sure you are constructing the 781 field properly).
