Dear NACO catalogers,
Please read the new version of LCRI 22.1B. It
contains a fairly significant change from the
draft text that was recently circulated for comment.
Persons who "work in a context other than that of
writing text" are now to be established based on
a "formal statement found in the item (e.g.,
statement of responsibility)". In other words, we
are now to treat such persons in the same way
that we treat authors. [The earlier draft
contained similar language, but said to continue
to base headings for artists and cartographers on
forms found in reference sources - no more.]
This is a big change and it affects catalogers of
all sorts of materials (maps, films, visual
materials, etc.). Previously, we were supposed to
base headings for such persons on forms found in reference sources.
=================================
Example:
Item cataloged: The three little pigs / with illustrations by P. Ward
Reference source: Ward, Peter; b. 5 May 1911
OLD WAY TO ESTABLISH
Heading: Ward, Peter,$d1911-
NEW WAY TO ESTABLISH
Heading: Ward, P.$q(Peter),$d1911-
==================================
Note that any person living before 1801 is still
to be established based on forms found in
reference sources (in the person's language or
the language of his/her country of residence or activity).
Please let me know if you have any questions.
