Subject: [PCCLIST] Cataloger's Desktop 2011 Issue 2 release + NACO Canadian names and VIAF

PCC list,

Please see the message below announcing the release of 2011 Issue 2 of Cataloger's Desktop.

Also please take note of the change in NACO policy for establishing Canadian personal and corporate names. NACO participants are now expected to consult Library and Archives Canada authority data as it appears in the Virtual International Authority File (VIAF). The policy change is outlined in the updated version of DCM Z1 1XX Headings section released in Cataloger's Desktop over the past weekend:

When the LAC heading is found in Canadian CIP data or access points on current LAC bibliographic records, use the LAC heading to create an NAR unless modifications are called for by NACO procedures as stated below. When the name to be established is not found in these sources, search the LAC name authority file in the VIAF http://viaf.org and proceed according to the guidelines below. Note that cataloger may choose to continue to search via AMICUS or by using the Canadiana database at: http://collectionscanada.gc.ca/canadiana-authorities/index/index?lang=eng

Personal Names:

Search the LAC name authority file in VIAF to find the LAC authorized form. When an authorized LAC heading is found, use the LAC form to create an NAR unless modifications are called for by NACO procedures as stated below. Add a 670 citation "LAC in VIAF" with the usual conventions for 670 citations of source information found in databases.

Corporate Names:

Search the LAC name authority file in VIAF to find the LAC authorized form.

When an authorized form for a Canadian corporate heading is not found in VIAF, both LC and PCC catalogers should create and contribute an NAR based on the information found in the resource being cataloged and then contact LAC for verification of the Canadian corporate name by using the Web form found at: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/naco/LAC-nacohdgform.html

Please consult DCM Z1, 1XX Headings section, for more information; the NARs LAC, NUC & CIP FAQ < http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/naco/nacocatfaq.html> on the NACO website has been updated to reflect the new policy on using the VIAF for Canadian names.

Cataloger's Desktop announcement:

Colleagues:

We are pleased to report that 2011 Issue 2 of Cataloger's Desktop was released over the weekend. Among the changes in this issue are:

New resources:

* GeoNames

* PCC Guidelines for Creating Bibliographic Records in Multiple Character Sets

* Understanding MARC Holdings Records

Revised resources:

* CONSER Editing Guide, Update 20

* Descriptive Cataloging Manual, 2011 Update 2

* Free-Floating Subdivisions, 23rd edition

* Subject Headings Manual, Update 1, February 2011

      Please note that there is a change with Descriptive Cataloging Manual (DCM). Prior to this issue DCM was split into 2 sections: a section that was available only to LC catalogers, and a section available to all. This distinction was reflected in the resource title, but it caused confusion to many because of extensive interlinking between the 2 sections. As of this issue, all DCM sections have been consolidated into a single resource that is available to all.

      Please let us know if there is anything we can do to improve the Cataloger's Desktop service. Thank you very much for your continued support.
