Hello all-

As many of you may have seen from LC's announcement last week, the RDA in NACO Training Modules are now available to us at the links below, and all NACO catalogers with some degree of independence formulating NARs may begin working their way through the training at any time, if they haven't already. The objective of the training is to eventually produce RDA name authority records to PCC standards, and after a period of review by LC, contribute RDA authority records to the national file in preparation for "Day 1" (currently 31 March 2013) when the national authority file will be converted to RDA and only RDA authority records will be accepted going forward from that date. We're part of Group 1, the first that will be using the tutorials and to go through the subsequent review process. LC has not yet provided any detailed information on the nature of the review process, but as soon as they do I'll pass that along.

There a couple of things to keep in mind. The training tutorials are not a NACO workshop. They are designed for experienced NACO catalogers that have gained NACO independence and are comfortable formulating NARs. And while we can go through the modules at our own pace, it is recommended to complete them in as short a timeframe as is possible. It is also recommended that they be viewed sequentially.

LC estimates the training to be a total of 10-12 hours. The modules are anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes long and there are also online demonstrations along with quizzes and exercises that must be completed. Additionally there are two follow up webinars that are currently scheduled for June 12, 9-11 a.m., and June 19, 1-3 p.m., but LC has not yet confirmed those dates for us.

I know everyone has a lot going on - RDA bibliographic training, ALA and other conferences on the horizon, vacation time to use, not to mention our daily job responsibilities - so it will be impossible for all of us to complete the training before the dates of the webinars, but those of us who are able should try to do so if we can. Technically the training period for Group 1 runs from now until mid-June, but we will have access to the modules and the recorded webinars after those dates.

I'm sure there will be numerous questions so please feel free to send them to me or any members of the NACO Coordinating Committee<http://www.library.yale.edu/cataloging/authorities/ncc.html#members>, or if you have comments, questions or suggestions on how to improve the training materials you can also send them directly to the PCC at naco at loc.gov<mailto:naco at loc.gov>.

Thanks,
--Rick
