SUMMARY OF DECISIONS, EDITORIAL MEETING NUMBER 3
March 18, 2013
PSD policy specialist responsible for this list: L. Dechman
CLASSIFICATION
LG395.C48
The note at the beginning of the LG schedule states that individual institutions limited to education in a special field should be classed with the topic. This institution is an agriculture school, which should be classed in S539.A-Z. A previous work about the institution has been classed in S539.T5, which is the classification number that should be used for this work. The proposal was not approved.
PQ6271.A53
The work cat. is a translation of a work originally written in Latin in 1609, and as such, it should be classed in PA8450.A+. The proposal may be resubmitted.
PQ8180.13; PQ8180.13.O475; PQ8180.22; [PQ8180.22.O64]
It appears that these numbers were proposed because one of the author names is a pseudonym. If one of the names is a pseudonym, then the name authority file should be updated. If the names are not representative of a pseudonym relationship, then the proposals should not have been made because they do not meet the criteria from CSM F 632, sec. 3.a. “Proposing literary author numbers for inclusion in the P schedules.” The proposals may be resubmitted, if necessary.
SUBJECT HEADINGS
Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:
H 1154, Languages
$v Conversation and phrase books (for beauty operators)
Announcements:
Library of Congress classification numbers in subject records
Some recent proposals have been made to add multiple classification numbers (053 fields) to single headings. The instructions in SHM H 365, sec. 1, remind catalogers that classification numbers are added when the caption for the number is identical or nearly identical in scope, meaning, and language to the subject heading. If the classification number is narrower in scope (e.g., political, social, environmental, etc. aspects of the heading), it is not appropriate to add the class number to the heading.
Literary warrant
Several proposals have been made recently that lack a citation (670) to a current work being cataloged. New and revised LC subject headings are proposed as needed for new cataloging based on information from the work being cataloged. This is the principle of “literary warrant.”
The meeting would like to remind catalogers that a work cat. citation is required for new concepts (SHM H 203, sec. 1). Proposals that are made to revise a heading, add references, etc., should provide source citations, which include a citation to the work being cataloged (SHM H 193, sec. 7).
Geonet (announcement originally on List 1210)
During the week of October 8, 2012 the search interface for Geonet was changed. Previously, the results screen would automatically display the approved form of name and any conventional or variant forms. The default display now shows only the approved form of name.
The conventional and variant forms can still be displayed by taking an additional step. On the search screen under “Custom Search Criteria” there is a box labeled “Name Type Search.” Next to that box is an “Unselect all” button. Click it. The button now turns into a “Select all” button. Click it again, and initiate the search. The conventional and variant forms will now be displayed in the results.
Other decisions:
Benji (Dog)
This proposal was made to change the heading to Higgins (Dog), which is the real name of the dog that played the character Benji in the movies. The meeting feels that there should be two headings instead. No change is necessary for the heading Benji (Dog). A new proposal may be submitted for Higgins (Dog). The proposal was not approved.
Bicycle sharing programs
The variant term “bike” is controlled on the heading Bicycles, therefore, the UF being proposed is not necessary. The proposal was not approved.
Catholic Church--Clergy
The proposal was made to add UFs for Catholic priests and Roman Catholic priests onto the heading. The SA note under Priests says to use the subdivision --Clergy under individual Christian denominations. The meeting does not wish to begin the practice of adding UFs such as those proposed. The proposal was not approved.
Chinatowns--United States; Little Italies--United States
The proposed headings are topic--geographic combinations that do not need authority records. There are Chinese American and Italian American neighborhoods that have never been, and never will be, called Chinatowns or Little Italies, so the corresponding UFs being proposed are not appropriate. UFs that begin "Ethnic neighborhoods" are not appropriate since Ethnic neighborhoods is the BT of Chinatowns and Little Italies. The proposed UFs that contain the subdivisions "United States (Chinese American)" and "United States (Italian American)" are in $z, but are not valid geographic subdivisions. Finally, the 053s given are for Chinese and Italians as ethnic groups in the U.S., not Chinatowns and Little Italies. The proposals were not approved.
Computer games--Modification; Video games--Modification
Modifications for computer games are not physical modifications, whereas the pattern cited, Tools--Modification, is physical alteration of the tools. Modification of computer games is covered by the existing heading Computer games--Programming because the modifications are made to the programming. The proposal was not approved.
A proposal to accompany the subject proposal Computer games--Modification was submitted for the classification number GV1469.17.M63. These proposals became separated in the editorial process and did not appear on the same list. However, since the subject proposal was not approved, the classification proposal was also not approved.
Eighteen seventies
SHM H 620, sec. 2.c, states that general headings for chronological periods are assigned only to general works on those periods not limited to specific topics. None of the works cited on the proposal appear to meet that criterion. The proposal was not approved.
Fort Siloso (Singapore)
This fort was active during World War II. According to SHM H 405, if a military installation is active after 1899, the heading should be established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.
Harpsichord
The UFs being added represent a different instrument. A separate proposal may be submitted for Lute harpsichord. The proposal was not approved.
Jordan River Valley
The addition of a UF in Italian is not appropriate for this heading. The proposal was not approved.
Novokuĭbyshevsk (Russia)
According to the citation from GeoNames in the proposal, Novokuĭbyshevsk (Russia) is a populated place. Therefore, the heading should be established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.
One-person shows (Performing arts)
SHM H 400, Background, states that scope notes serve to limit the scope of a heading, thereby helping readers to determine to what extent it covers the materials that they seek, and it allows catalogers to maintain consistency in the way headings are assigned. For this reason, a “laundry list” of attributes or examples that may or may not be exhaustive is seldom (if ever) a good idea. Additionally, the meeting does not believe that there is any confusion over the meaning of the heading without a scope note. The proposal was not approved.
Qiandao Lake (China)
Geonet was not cited completely. There are two Qiandao Hu in ADM1 Zhejiang, and both have variants that should be added to the proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Quanzhou Harbor (China)
Geonet is given as a “Source not found” in a 675, but this harbor is actually in Geonet. The harbor is called Quanzhou Wan, and there are several variants. The changes to the Geonet search interface may have been the problem, so guidance for searching Geonet is given above in the Announcements section. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Student strike, Québec, 2012
The Background statement of SHM H 1592 states that most events are not referred to by specific names. For such events, headings such as Student strikes--[place] are used instead. The meeting could not find that this strike has been specifically named. The heading and most of the UFs appear to be descriptive phrases, not alternate names. The heading Student strikes--Québec (Province)--Québec should be used instead. The proposal was not approved.
Student strike, Québec, 2012, in mass media
The work being cataloged is about news coverage of the strike, not the depiction of the strike in mass media, including films, television, novels, comic books, news, etc. Therefore, the proposed heading is not appropriate for the work. Student strikes--Press coverage--Québec (Province)--Québec should be used instead. The proposal was not approved.
Thiem family
According to the Dictionary of American family names (Hanks, 2003), Thiem, Diehm, and Teem should be variants on the existing heading Diem family. The variants will be added to the existing heading. The proposal was not approved.
World War, 1939-1945--Participation, Georgian
SHM H 1200, Special provisions, sec. 2, states that --Participation, [nationality] subdivisions cannot be used under the headings for the world wars. The heading World War, 1939-1945--Georgia should be used instead. The proposal was not approved.
