[Yale ArchivesSpace] Daily AS Update from IT

Hello Everyone,

Library IT would like to provide some updates on the status of troubleshooting performance issues with ArchivesSpace in production.  The following work has been conducted over the past few days:


*         A shift from infrastructure troubleshooting to application and database connection troubleshooting

*         Establishing application monitoring via New Relic

*         Establishing slow query logging analysis in MySQL to assist with examination of SQL statements and query formation

*         Also running explain plan against the most offensive/frequent SQL errors

*         An intensive  examination of the JRuby error messages in the application logs

*         Downgrading the version of Java from 8 to 7

This course of action is recommended because all hardware, memory, etc. monitoring shows well within normal ranges and is not bearing any immediate red flags related to overall system performance. Several steps were completed to rule out the Yale network as a contributing factor, including switching from a flexible NIC (network interface card) to a VMXNET3 virtual network device which is faster. Additionally, a copy of the MySQL db was installed locally on the app server, but it did not eliminate negative performance.

Library IT continues discussions with Chris Fitzpatrick at Lyrasis to investigate application and database timeout errors logged in the production ArchivesSpace, and solicit advice on monitoring system performance.

This evening, Library IT will also perform some MySQL work including an upgrade to MySQL version 5.6. Please note the work this evening will result in a brief period of downtime for ArchivesSpace, beginning at approximately 8:30pm.
