New and updated policies & procedures documents:

1. Provisional Policy for 13-Digit ISBNS has been added to the Editing
section of the Cataloging at Yale/Policies & Procedures page:

YUL policies are documented for original cataloging, copy cataloging, and
order records. For background on the 13-digit ISBN, you may want to look at
Marsha Garman's PowerPoint slide show for ASG. There is a link provided to
the slide presentation in the RELATED DOCUMENTS section. Although the
13-digit ISBN only becomes the standard in 2007, many publishers are
including it with the current standard 10-digit ISBN. At present OCLC
cannot handle the 13-digit ISBN; OCLC currently stores the number in field
024. You should generally use the 10-digit ISBN for searching until further
notice. The 024 field in OCLC records should be left as is and not
re-tagged when the record is exported from the WorldCat database.

2. ENUM/CHRON. (Also on Cataloging at Yale/Policies & Procedures in the
Item Records section)

http://www.library.yale.edu/cataloging/Orbis2Manual/enumchron.htm

This document has been revised to clarify standards for recording
enumerative and chronological designation where gaps occur in bound
volumes and for the rare situations when it is considered necessary to
record alternate numbering schemes. Long story short, we will not use as
much part detail in ENUM/CHRON as we would in MFHD, where the detailed
level-4 ANSI/NISO standard continues unchanged. Information about missing
issues may be recorded (optionally) in Free Text. The ENUM/CHRON standards
are intended to apply to situations where label printing is affected; staff
who create item records where labels are not printed are free to include
more detail.

We are also asking that staff who enter data into the ENUM/CHRON fields be
aware of the necessity for line-breaks, and to insert a space (or in some
exceptional cases, an underscore) to ensure that some of the lengthier
serial call numbers are formatted correctly. The new examples demonstrate
how ENUM/CHRON should be entered so call numbers format correctly with the
label printing program.

Other new items. a. Instructions for the use of the descriptors Suppl. and
Index are given along with examples. b. Alternative numbering punctuation
is an equal sign (formerly parentheses in the Marking document). c. More
information is included about the SML label printing program (and its
limitations).

Note also that, to be consistent with the Media procedures document, the
item type descriptor in the example for accompanying material has been
changed from CD-ROM to CD.
