Subject: [Desktop] Changes to Cataloger's Desktop TOC pane
Colleagues:
I would like to alert you to a change to Cataloger's Desktop's Table of Contents (TOC) pane that has been implemented at 8:30 Eastern Standard Time (1330 GMT). When 2009 Issue 1 was put into production a little over a week ago we immediately noticed that the TOC pane was taking significantly longer to refresh, particularly after performing searches. After investigating the causes, it was determined that the most likely cause was that Desktop has reached the limit of what the underlying software, FAST NXT, can comfortably handle in its TOC.
The change we have just implemented involves NXT capturing an image of the TOC in its operating cache, and then calling up that cached image each time the TOC is displayed. This means that initial TOC requests will be a bit slower, but as NXT saves the various combinations of TOC resources into its cache, the TOC will become very much faster.
We are alerting you to this since there may be a noticable slow down in TOC response this morning. If you experience any problems with the TOC that don't seem to be consistent with this explanation, please alert us OFFLIST at bjoh at loc.gov.
Just so you know, we have recently begun work on the next generation of Cataloger's Desktop. Please stay tuned to this space. An announcement will be forthcoming in the next few days explaining what we are working on.
Thank you for your continued support.
