David:

You are absolutely right. When we put 2009 Issue 1 into production
a couple of weeks ago, we noticed right away that the TOC was taking
much too long to display. After some investigation our contractor
decided that the root of the problem was that we had maxed out the
underlying FAST NXT software's ability to build the TOC on the fly. His
proposed solution was to capture TOC images in the server's memory
(cache). After any given TOC resource combination was displayed once,
the server would remember that combination, and all subsequent requests
for that combination would be very fast.

In theory that was a good idea, but in practice it hasn't been
working right. My test displays this morning were averaging 44 seconds,
with individual instances ranging from 30 to 73 seconds. All of this
just isn't acceptable and isn't what we were told to expect.

We regret this very poor system response time. We are working with
our contractor to sort this out. I will keep you posted as there are
updates.

Is anyone else getting frustrated by how long it takes to display the
TOC in Catalogers’ Desktop? I’ve clocked it at well over 60 seconds
several times. What’s really bothersome is that the program times me
out (which I understand), and when I want to return to it, I have to
wait again! Sorry for venting, but it’s getting aggravating.
