Environmental impacts: contributing factors

This report<http://visit.oclc.org/t?r=896&c=2095398&l=30085&ctl=300EAE7:C073EF2ACA43AF34BBABD92BB91648EEAB211475F9D6EDD4&> details the findings from an OCLC Research-sponsored study of the environmental impact of current interlibrary loan practices, as well as recommended practices for reducing the carbon footprint of resource sharing operations worldwide.

OCLC Research<http://visit.oclc.org/t?r=896&c=2095398&l=30085&ctl=300EAE8:C073EF2ACA43AF34BBABD92BB91648EEAB211475F9D6EDD4&> commissioned a study of current interlibrary loan (ILL) practices by California Environmental Associates, a firm of environmental impact consultants. Utilizing data provided by OCLC and gathered during interviews with staff at a dozen U.S. libraries, the consultants correlated specific interlending practices with measurable impacts on greenhouse gas emission levels. These findings, along with key recommendations and best practices, are included in the report.

Technology experts and stakeholders who participated in a recent survey believe online information will continue to be organized and made accessible in smarter and more useful ways in coming years, but there is stark dispute about whether the improvements will match Sir Tim Berners-Lee’s first-proposed, visionary ideals of a fully functioning Semantic Web.

Some 895 experts responded to the invitation of the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project and Elon University’s Imagining the Internet Center to predict the likely progress toward achieving the goals of the Semantic Web by the year 2020. Nearly half of the respondents said Berners-Lee’s original vision is unrealistically broad and unattainable. Most said, however, that online information will continue to be organized and accessible in smarter and more useful ways in coming years.

Asked to think about the likelihood that Berners-Lee and his allies will realize their vision, often called Web 3.0, these technology experts and stakeholders were divided and often contentious.

 *   Some 47 percent agreed with the statement: “By 2020, the Semantic Web envisioned by Tim Berners-Lee will not be as fully effective as its creators hoped and average users will not have noticed much of a difference.”
 *   Some 41 percent agreed with the opposite statement, which posited: “By 2020, the Semantic Web envisioned by Tim Berners-Lee and his allies will have been achieved to a significant degree and have clearly made a difference to average Internet users.”

Another comparison shopping app for the iPhone now displays listings for local libraries in the U.S. through WorldCat.

Book Bazaar<http://visit.oclc.org/t?r=896&c=2095398&l=30085&ctl=300EAEE:C073EF2ACA43AF34BBABD92BB91648EEAB211475F9D6EDD4&> is the latest in a series of mobile apps designed for consumers that now include local library results. Developed by Bayview Labs in Mountain View, California, USA, Book Bazaar also lets a user compare prices of books at online stores and local bookstores.

A user simply types in the book he or she is interested in, using a title, author, keyword or ISBN search. The ability to browse titles is also available. The app uses WorldCat APIs<http://visit.oclc.org/t?r=896&c=2095398&l=30085&ctl=300EAEF:C073EF2ACA43AF34BBABD92BB91648EEAB211475F9D6EDD4&> to deliver results for libraries nearby that hold the item in WorldCat. Local library phone numbers, URLs, location and mapping information are also available.
