OCLC is pleased to announce that it will perform cataloging and processing services for the National Research Council’s Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (NRC-CISTI), Canada’s national science library and the library for NRC.
Under the new agreement, OCLC will perform all of NRC-CISTI’s cataloging in a variety of formats, including serials. OCLC will catalog a wide range of publications from all NRC institutes, programs and branches. Cataloged materials will be discoverable through NRC-CISTI’s Catalogue<http://visit.oclc.org/t?r=896&c=2315804&l=30085&ctl=32E8B4B:C073EF2ACA43AF34CC125E7425C52364B89F2C3D9CD4D1CB&>, as well as through OCLC’s WorldCat.org, the world’s largest online resource for finding information in libraries.
“Cataloging for NRC-CISTI is underway,” said Daniel Boivin, Executive Director, OCLC Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean. “Once the processes between our respective organizations have been fully implemented, we anticipate that OCLC in Canada will catalog and process roughly 17,000 items per year in English and French. Materials will vary from monographs and serials to proceedings, technical papers and journals.”

Some 35 percent of U.S. adults have software applications or “apps” on their phones, yet only 24 percent of adults use those apps. Many adults who have apps on their phones, particularly older adults, do not use them, and 11 percent of cell owners are not sure if their phones are equipped with apps.
Among cell phone owners, 29 percent have downloaded apps to their phones and 13 percent have paid to download apps.
“An apps culture is clearly emerging among some cell phone users, particularly men and young adults,” said Kristen Purcell, Associate Director for Research at the Pew Internet Project. “Still, it is clear that this is the early stage of adoption when many cell owners do not know what their phone can do. The apps market seems somewhat ahead of a majority of adult cell phone users.”

This series of free events will explore the next wave of innovation for libraries
OCLC is embarking on a series of regional events around the U.K. and Ireland in October and November to brief libraries on major developments that will improve service provision during a looming period of austerity for the sector.
The roadshows, entitled “Making Partnerships Matter,” shine a spotlight on OCLC’s service strategy. Each event will kick-off with a presentation by Robin Murray, Vice President, Global Product Management, giving an overview, which will then be followed by presentations on WorldCat data and services, WorldCat Local and the newly launched Web-scale Management Services.
