Lawrence Technological University believes in cooperative ventures: OCLC WorldShare™ Management Services just made sense
Gary Cocozzoli, Director of the Library at Lawrence Technological University, shared his institution’s path to WorldShare Management Services during an OCLC session at ALA Annual on June 23, 2012. Gary is one of the library’s six full-time librarians; they are assisted by three staff and a team of student assistants.
Lawrence Technological University<http://visit.oclc.org/t?r=896&c=3315645&l=80282&ctl=43A652F:C073EF2ACA43AF340CC40EDA812D1A82646EBCBCC7604490&> is located in Southfield, Michigan, which is just north of Detroit. It was founded in 1932 as both a day and evening college, so that working adults could attend classes during the evening to complete a bachelor’s degree.
Challenges abound. Since the university is tuition-based (and not state-supported), we have been hit by the recession in the last few years. But the university continues to expand its curriculum and programs so our campus-wide resources have to stretch further. We currently have about 4,400 students, with about one-third graduate students, including doctoral students. The younger faculty members coming to the university are also much more research-oriented today than I’ve seen throughout my career at Lawrence. And so the demands to acquire library resources that we don’t currently own are increasing dramatically.
[Gary_LawrenceTech]
Gary Cocozzoli, Director of the Library, Lawrence Technological University
Small in size but big in scope. Our budget is just over $1 million, which is meant to cover all of the library's expenses to support more than 100 programs. About one-third of this is spent on electronic resources, and we expect that to only increase. We also have 95,000 e-books and 93,000 e-journal titles, plus our print collection.
WorldShare beckons. Our current ILS system was aging and it wasn't keeping up with all the new technology we were seeing out there. Most of all, we were tired of the 7 percent rise in annual maintenance fees with no improvement in the product. So we decided to consider our options—Open Source, traditional SaaS and next- generation systems—but we kept coming back to WorldShare Management Services. What impressed us the most was its overall cooperative Webscale concept and design. It wasn't that it was cheaper—it's true that it's less expensive—but it was its value for the dollar that was more compelling. You're getting a lot for what you are paying for. And with no up-front software purchase, you're not buying a system, you're buying a service.

Librarians are Wikipedians Too
WebJunction and OCLC Research have held several webinars in July and August featuring Max Klein, Wikipedian in Residence at OCLC Research. Max has provided an overview of past efforts and the future potential of libraries and librarians working with Wikipedia.
Wikipedia is an increasingly prominent player in the Web search environment, and more people are finding it "a good place to start research." Despite open questions regarding quality, Wikipedia shares common goals with libraries in ensuring free accessibility to information, and relying on authoritative sources. The webinar discusses strategies to drive Web and foot traffic to libraries through the use of Wikipedia. You'll also hear powerful tips and tricks about the software and policies of Wikipedia, helping librarians to critically address quality for themselves.

Two-part 'Just for CopyCats' course coming up!
[Calendar]
This two-part course outlines the basic principles of copy cataloging in a MARC record environment. It will introduce you to the art of: finding cataloging records that you can copy; ensuring that those records really match your resources; and fixing the really important things that might need fixing in those records.
Just for CopyCats. Part 1, Background and Searching (TMQ)
Part 1 of this course is made up of a series of free online modules, available 24/7, and covers: some useful background material; how to read a MARC record for searching and matching; and advice on search terms and results.
Register for Part 1 »<http://visit.oclc.org/t?r=896&c=3315645&l=80282&ctl=43A6534:C073EF2ACA43AF340CC40EDA812D1A82646EBCBCC7604490&>
Just for CopyCats. Part 2, Matching and Essential Editing—AACR/MARC (TMQ)
Part 2 of this course is made up of a series of four live online modules, and covers: how to identify potential problems when searching; how to match AACR/MARC records to resources; how to deal with difficult dates; and how to do only the most essential editing of AACR/MARC records. We will also provide practice in these steps. These four live online modules will take place in early December.
