New OCLC Research Prototype Kindred Works Provides Content-based Recommendation of Similar Items of Interest
OCLC Research has developed an experimental service called Kindred Works<http://www.oclc.org/research/activities/kindredworks.html> that provides a set of items similar to an item of interest. This prototype service uses various characteristics of a sample work, such as classification numbers, subject headings, and genre terms to retrieve related resources from WorldCat and produce a list of items similar to the sample. Kindred Works can help you find a new book to read or movie to watch based on other books or movies you like.
* Read the Kindred Works news announcement<http://www.oclc.org/research/news/2012/10-29.html>
* View the Kindred Works activity page<http://www.oclc.org/research/activities/kindredworks.html>
* Try the Kindred Works prototype<http://experimental.worldcat.org/kindredworks/>

OCLC Research Launches Registering Researchers in Authority Files Activity
We recently launched a new Registering Researchers in Authority Files<http://www.oclc.org/research/activities/registering-researchers.html> task group of OCLC Research Library Partner staff and others-including experts from the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States-who are involved in uniquely identifying authors and researchers that can be shared in a linked data environment. Our interest in this area was spurred by institutions' need to uniquely identify all their researchers to measure their scholarly output, a factor in reputation and ranking. Yet national authority files cover researchers only partially-they do not include authors that write only journal articles, or researchers who don't publish but create or contribute to data sets and other research activities.
Our goal with this activity is to summarize the benefits and trade-offs of emerging approaches to the problem of incomplete national authority files and make it easier for researchers and institutions to measure their scholarly output more accurately.
* Read the OCLC Research news announcement<http://www.oclc.org/research/news/2012/10-30.html> about this new activity
* See the Registering Researchers in Authority Files activity page<http://www.oclc.org/research/activities/registering-researchers.html>
* Read Karen Smith-Yoshimura's Registering Researchers in Authority Files blog post<http://hangingtogether.org/?p=2273>

Open Access Wikipedia Challenge Extended Indefinitely
Created by OCLC Research Wikipedian in Residence Max Klein<http://www.oclc.org/research/people/klein.html> and Wikipedia Loves Libraries<http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Loves_Libraries> community volunteers, the Open Access Wikipedia Challenge<https://p2pu.org/en/groups/open-access-wikipedia-challenge/> is a free online course that teaches basic Wikipedia skills and utilizes open content from a new Open Access Bot. It was initially only available during Open Access week, 22-29 October 2012 to celebrate this year's Open Access Week<http://www.openaccessweek.org/>. However, due to ongoing interest it will remain available indefinitely. It's free, open to all and no experience is necessary. All participants who complete the challenge will receive a special edition open access Wikipedia barnstar<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Oaw2.png> (a badge of honor on Wikipedia).
See the OCLC Research news announcement<http://www.oclc.org/research/news/2012/10-30a.html> for complete details and contact OCLC Research Wikipedian in Residence Max Klein<http://www.oclc.org/research/people/klein.html> with questions and feedback.

Attention UK Partners: Funding is Available to Support Wikipedians in Residence!
Regular readers of the Weekly Update are aware of the work of OCLC's Wikipedian in Residence. But have you considered hosting a Wikipedian<http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedian_in_Residence> of your own? For those of you in the UK, there is an opportunity to receive funding<http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/2012-13_Wikipedians_in_Residence> to support such a position for a limited time (between mid November and the end of January). If you are interested and would like to chat with either Senior Program Officer Merrilee Proffitt<http://www.oclc.org/research/people/proffitt.html> or OCLC's Wikipedian in Residence, Max Klein<http://www.oclc.org/research/people/klein.html>, please feel free to drop us a line! We would love to hear more about your ideas and aspirations. But get in touch soon-the closing date for submitting expressions of interest to Wikipedia is 15 November 2012.
