"Managing Our Online Profersonal Lives" Presentation Stresses Importance of Managing Your Online Identity

Created by Lorcan Dempsey<http://www.oclc.org/research/people/dempsey.html>, this presentation includes random notes and interesting quotes that illustrate not only how researchers are using social media but also how measurements of their social web impact relates to their personal brand and altmetrics. Lorcan presented this to the staff at the University of Pittsburgh Library System<http://www.library.pitt.edu/> on 7 September 2012.

Several takeaways from the presentation include:

* There are different ways of participating in a network world, and they are always changing.

* There is real value in being active online and developing a visible online profile around your professional role.

* The first page of Google results for you is your real homepage.

* Consider your personal brand: how can you ensure that the right you-your professional skill set, not your personal life-surfaces first when people search you on the web?

This presentation is available on the OCLC Research website<http://www.oclc.org/content/dam/research/presentations/dempsey/pitt2012.pptx> [.pptx] and SlideShare<http://www.slideshare.net/lisld/managing-our-online-profersonal-lives>. We encourage you to view it and share it with others.

Get Your Preservation Metadata Checkup! Last Call to Register to Attend Our Preservation Health Check Workshop at iPRES2012 on 2 October

OCLC Research and the Open Planets Foundation<http://www.openplanetsfoundation.org/about> (OPF) are conducting a Preservation Health Check<http://www.oclc.org/research/activities/phc.html> Pilot to analyze the quality of preservation metadata created and in use by operational repository and deposit systems and evaluate the potential of such metadata for assessing digital preservation risks. As part of this pilot, we are holding a Preservation Health Workshop<http://www.oclc.org/research/events/2012/10-02.html> at the PREMIS Implementation Fair<http://www.loc.gov/standards/premis/premis-implementation-fair2012.html> (iPRES2012) at the University of Toronto on 2 October 2012. This workshop will explore the use of real life preservation metadata for risk assessment, introduce and discuss the concept behind the preservation health check pilot and propose an approach for mapping preservation metadata schemas with preservation risk assessment frameworks and walk through a number of examples.

Digital preservation practitioners and researchers/experts are invited to come to the workshop with real life examples of preservation metadata, with which we can check and correct theoretical assumptions. We expect this exercise to help build a better shared understanding of the why, what and how preservation metadata are collected and created. Visit the Preservation Health Check Workshop event page for more information<http://www.oclc.org/research/events/2012/10-02.html> or visit the iPRES2012 page to register<https://ipres.ischool.utoronto.ca/registration-fees/>.
