Highlights for the OCLC Research Library Partnership

Register now for the Evolving Scholarly Record Workshop, 10 December 2014, Washington, DC
·

Libraries need to reconceive their roles as stewards of the scholarly record. There is a vast amount of digital research information in need of curation and libraries are not the only stakeholders in the emerging enviroment. Co-sponsored by OCLC Research, the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI), and our hosts, the George Washington University Libraries, this workshop builds on the framework presented in the OCLC Research report, The Evolving Scholarly Record<http://www.oclc.org/research/publications/library/2014/oclcresearch-evolving-scholarly-record-2014-overview.html>. Join us to explore the responsibilities of research libraries, data archives, and other stewards of research output—and identify new alliances that should be forged to create a reliable ecosystem for preserving the scholarly record and making it accessible. OCLC Research Library Partners, CNI attendees, and other interested community members with a mission for collecting, making available, and preserving the scholarly record are invited to attend the workshop.

Seating is limited so register now<http://registration.oclc.org/reg/?pc=2014-12-10EvolvingScholarlyRecordWorkshop> to secure your spot at this free event! See the Evolving Scholarly Record workshop page<http://www.oclc.org/research/events/2014/12-10.html> for complete details.

This is the second in a series of Evolving Scholarly Record workshops. The first<http://www.oclc.org/research/events/2014/06-10-workshop.html> was held in Amsterdam on 10 June 2014. You can also read Ricky Erway's three part summary of the ESR workshop we held in Amsterdam in June (on our group blog, HangingTogether<http://hangingtogether.org/>).

Results from OCLC Research International Linked Data Survey for Implementers Now Available
•
With so much interest in linked data and a need for more information on linked data projects, OCLC Research conducted an international linked data survey for implementers between 7 July and 15 August 2014 to learn details of specific projects or services that format metadata as linked data and/or make subsequent uses of it. This exploratory survey was prompted by the OCLC Research Library Partners Metadata Managers Focus Group, who are excited by the potential of linked data applications to make new, valuable uses of existing metadata and wanted to learn from the experiences in the libraries/archives/museums community what is possible to do and how to go about it.

The survey received 122 responses from users in 15 countries and included descriptions of 76 linked data projects or services. 25 of the described projects consume linked data; 4 publish linked data; 47 both consume and publish linked data.

You can read more about results from the survey in the news release, and also read OCLC Research Program Officer Karen Smith-Yoshimura’s Linked Data Survey Results series of HangingTogether blog posts:

·

We are pleased to welcome Case Western Reserve University<http://library.case.edu/ksl/> to the OCLC Research Library Partnership<http://www.oclc.org/research/partnership.html>. The Partner Representative is Mr. Arnold Hirshon, Associate Provost and University Librarian. We look forward to collaborating with Arnold and his team to achieve significant, innovative and collective action for the benefit of research libraries and their users.

Case Western Reserve University will also join SHARES<http://www.oclc.org/research/activities/shares.html>, an international sharing partnership comprised of over 100 OCLC Research Library Partner libraries in ten countries. OCLC Research Library Partners participate in SHARES to expand and enhance their local collections with materials owned by other Partners around the world. Case Western Reserve University will be the 8th new library to join SHARES in calendar year 2014.

Of note from OCLC Research
OCLC Research publishes preprint of "Collection Directions: The Evolution of Library Collections and Collecting"<http://www.oclc.org/research/news/2014/10-14.html>
Written by Lorcan Dempsey, Constance Malpas, and Brian Lavoie, this article takes a broad view of the evolution of collecting behaviors in a network environment and suggests some future directions based on various simple models. The authors look at the changing dynamics of print collections, at the greater engagement with research and learning behaviors, and at trends in scholarly communication. The goal is to provide context within which libraries can discuss changing patterns of investment across collection categories.

Kiwis in the Collection: The New Zealand Presence in the Published Record<http://www.oclc.org/research/publications/library/2014/oclcresearch-new-zealand-presence-2014-overview.html>
Written by Brian Lavoie, this report characterizes the size and scope of the New Zealand presence in the published record, highlights some of its salient characteristics, and describes its diffusion around the world. In addition to those with a general interest in New Zealand and its creative tradition, this report may also be of interest to those responsible for the stewardship of a nation’s cultural heritage, as it is expressed in the published record.
