From diane.napert at yale.edu Mon Jun 3 08:11:11 2019 From: diane.napert at yale.edu (Napert, Diane) Date: Mon, 3 Jun 2019 12:11:11 +0000 Subject: [Yulcat-l] Ben Abrahamse talk, "Catalogs as Texts in the Age of Data." today, June 3, 10 a.m., 344 Winchester, YUL Technical Services Large Conference Room, B149 Message-ID: Colleagues, We are pleased to have Ben Abrahamse, Cataloging Coordinator, Metadata and Digital Collections Services at Massachusetts Institute of Technology give his talk on the subject of: Catalogs as Texts in the Age of Data. Following is his description of the talk: Current thinking about cataloging emphasizes the creation and management of bibliographic descriptions as sets of data to be manipulated and shared digitally. Yet catalogs began as, and in many significant ways, continue to function as texts to be read by present and future users. This is the case both with respect to individual bibliographic entries (or "records") and with respect to the catalog (or information retrieval system) as a whole. We will discuss the persistent textual nature of cataloging work, its significance for practitioners and users, and offer a gentle critique of excessively or exclusively "dataistic" approaches to cataloging work and its products. I am looking forward to Ben's talk today. Best, Diane P.S. Apologies in advance for cross-posting! This completes a transition that I initiated in 2018 July, after serving in this role since 2001. In addition to coordinating Beinecke manuscript cataloging procedures, quality control, and training, they represent Beinecke on YUL-wide committees including the Cataloging Coordinating Council (?ve) and the Archival and Manuscript Description Committee (Stephanie). Passing on these responsibilities will allow me to focus my time on archival processing and cataloging, and to offer support as needed to special cataloging projects. Please be encouraged to bring any questions or comments relating to Beinecke manuscript cataloging to Stephanie or ?ve. Best wishes, Karen Spicher
