Please note that we do not accept AAT or RVM subject headings in our records and that they need to be deleted manually when records are being imported from OCLC. See our Variable Field Deletion Policy on the Cataloging @ Yale site. On behalf of the Authorities & Identities Advisory Group, Danijela Danijela Matkovi? Catalog/Metadata Librarian Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library Yale University Library P.O. Box 208330 New Haven CT 06520-8330 Tel. 203 432-8383 From: Program for Cooperative Cataloging > On Behalf Of Whitacre,Cynthia Sent: Tuesday, March 8, 2022 3:58 PM To: PCCLIST at LISTSERV.LOC.GOV Subject: [PCCLIST] Quality improvements coming to subject headings in WorldCat At OCLC, we?re always working to improve the quality of WorldCat records and make library resources more accessible to users worldwide. On 14 March 2022, we?re kicking off our latest project to enhance WorldCat data quality by controlling and enriching subject headings in individual bibliographic records with the many authority files we?ve made available in WorldCat. We expect to improve 350 million WorldCat bibliographic records, making them more valuable to information seekers worldwide. The project has two major components. We?ll control headings by linking subjects in existing bibliographic records to authority files. This will make it easier for you to maintain high-quality records to help library users find resources, and it will ensure that your records update when the language used in subject headings changes. In addition, we?ll enrich records with headings that are mapped across authority files, such as from the French Canadian R?pertoire de vedettes-mati?re (RVM) into English-language authority files. This will help library users find the resources they need, regardless of what language they search in. For example: Before enrichment 650 0 $a Chemistry, Physical and theoretical. After enrichment 650 0 $a Chemistry, Physical and theoretical. 650 2 $a Chemistry, Physical. 650 6 $a Chimie physique et the?orique. 650 7 $a physical chemistry. $2 aat If your library uses WorldShare Management Services (WMS), you?ll get this benefit automatically, and your users will start seeing these improvements as soon as they?re available. If you aren?t a WMS library, check your settings for WorldCat updates in WorldShare Collection Manager to make sure you receive these quality improvements. You may notice larger-than-usual files of enhanced records during this project. If needed, request access to WorldShare Collection Manager (included with your OCLC Cataloging and Metadata Subscription). Please contact OCLC Support with any questions.
