[Yulcat-l] Duplicate Item Barcodes: Check Voyager Settings

Hello Yul-Cat

We've discovered rolls of single item barcodes that are duplicate rolls. We have also discovered that Voyager Catalog settings are sometimes incomplete, allowing people to assign duplicate item barcodes. As a result, we have many items in Voyager that have duplicate item barcodes.

For example:
The first barcode (on one roll) will be on a microform record.
The second barcode (a duplicate of the first barcode, but on a different roll) will be in an item for a book.
Result: when you do a search for that single item barcode, you will get two item records in return, for two totally unrelated items.

Solution (going forward):

  *   Please check your Voyager Cataloging Module settings.
  *   Click on "Options" in the Menu Title bar.
  *   Select "Preferences".
  *   Click on the "Workflow" tab.
  *   Make sure a check mark is next to "Check for Duplicate Item Barcodes"

At some point, the library will probably run a report of duplicate item record barcodes. For now, we're interested in doing what we can to assign only one item barcode to one item record at a time.
