A potential limitation of RefWorks is that you need to be online to
use it. There is a work-around for users who want to write a paper
and cite references while offline. Here are the steps:

Before you are offline for any amount of time, go to RefWorks, click
on the References drop down menu, select Export, choose the Citation
List option, and click Save. This format provides you with a list of
your records and their RefWorks Reference ID number. Save or print
this document for easy reference.

When you need to cite a reference, take the Ref ID and enter it into
your manuscript and continue to work. Use the format {{43}} i.e.,
double curly brackets, reference ID number for the citation, close
brackets. If you want to include a page the format is {{43 /s 100}}
where 100 is the cited page.

When you are able to get back online, you can take your manuscript
and run it through RefWorks to format your in-text citations and
bibliography. Click on Bibliography in the Tool Bar, select "Format
Paper and Bibliography," browse to locate your manuscript and click
"Create Bibliography." Your document will formatted to include
in-text citations and a bibliography.
