Dear Colleagues,

I am working on a new class, "Free Culture! Public Domain Photography
on the Web," (see abstract below) and I would like to give a demo to
those interested on Thursday, June 21, at 10:30am in the SML
electronic classroom. The class runs approx. 1 hour. I intend to
offer this workshop to students in the fall but I would very much
like to get some critical feedback first. I wanted to ask those of
you on this list before opening it up to Yulibl since space is
limited to 15 people. Please indicate via email if you are
interested. Thank you in advance for any help and your willingness to
participate.

"Free Culture! Public Domain Photography on the Web" examines several
popular websites frequently used to find digitized photographs in the
public domain. The goal is to compare the (sometimes) fast and
(relatively) easy use of Google Image, Flickr, and Wikipedia to the
more trusted, scholarly resources found in the Library of Congress
Prints and Photographs Division online collections. While a Google
Image search is sometimes sufficient for quick reference, students at
Yale should be familiar with the vast collections of a large,
federally funded cultural organization like the Library of Congress.
This workshop includes, but is not limited to, a brief introduction
to the public domain, tracking down high quality images, methods of
organization (e.g. tagging vs. subject headings), and the potentially
unlawful copyrighting of public domain materials.

Hope to see some of you next Thursday.

Sincerely,
Ian
