[Yulpub] Availability of VRC slides and photographs in the upcoming academic year

Dear Library Colleagues:

In preparation for the anticipated move in 2008 into new facilities and in 
support of faculty-driven needs for rapidly building up digital image 
teaching resources in the visual arts, the Visual Resources Collection 
(VRC) department is moving forward with great energy towards completion of 
two Provost-funded projects for digitization and LSF transfer of the slide 
and photograph collections.

Due to an incredible amount of hard work this summer by VRC staff and 
student assistants, we have already selected over 80,000 of the 160,000 
slides and photographs due to be digitized, and have made great headway in 
organizing and completing the first phase of LSF transfers that when 
completed will total more than 500,000 items.  There are now over 100,000 
arts-related images available through the Digital Library 
(DL)    http://www.library.yale.edu/libraries/digcoll.html#vrc  with 
thousands of new images added each month, and equivalent numbers will also 
be available through Luna Insight (into which VRC content is batch loaded 
on a slight delay).

Please be advised however that the project work will affect the use of the 
VRC slide and photograph collections, as significant portions of them may 
not be immediately available.  The attached notice explains in more detail 
and outlines how the VRC is prepared to help Yale faculty, students, and 
staff during the upcoming year.

In turn, we appreciate your help in distributing this information to your 
faculty colleagues and others as you think best.

The most important thing for everyone to keep in mind is that planning in 
advance to use VRC slides and photographs is strongly recommended.  As 
always, if you or your colleagues have any further questions or concerns, 
please do not hesitate to refer them to me.
