I’m pleased to announce that the latest update to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography is now available at http://www.oxforddnb.com/. This update adds biographies of 125 men and women active between the twelfth and late twentieth century, with a special focus on First World War lives. As well as new biographies, the update adds 21 “reference group” essays to our continuing series, including the Gunpowder Plotters<http://www.oxforddnb.com/public/themes/95/95640.html> of the early 1600s, the women of the Bluestocking circle<http://www.oxforddnb.com/public/themes/63/63013.html>, and the Bounty mutineers<http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/theme/96371> of 1789.

NEW BIOGRAPHIES
The 125 lives added as part of our most recent update feature persons of all nationalities and from all walks of life. With an eye towards the upcoming election, we are pleased to feature the extraordinary life of Victoria Woodhull<http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/98231>, who, in 1872, became the first women to ever run for the US presidency. Other notable additions include Nellie Boxall<http://www.oxforddnb.com/public/dnb/94651.html> (1890-1965), servant to Virginia Woolf, Hugh Locke King<http://www.oxforddnb.com/public/dnb/66280.html> (1848-1926), motor-racing pioneer, Edward Harrison<http://www.oxforddnb.com/public/dnb/98022.html> (1869-1918), inventor of the gas mask, and Alfred Leete<http://www.oxforddnb.com/public/dnb/57159.html> (1882–1933), designer of the infamous poster “Your country needs you!”

FEATURE: FIRST WORLD WAR LIVES
To coincide with the UK’s celebration of the 90th anniversary of the November 1918 armistice, October’s update extends the Oxford DNB’s coverage of men and women active during the First World War. Read ODNB editor Lawrence Goldman’s introduction<http://www.oup.com/oxforddnb/info/prelims/title/preface/#1> to this set of featured lives, which focuses on persons involved in the later stages of the war, or read Professor Gary Sheffield’s essay on General officers of the First World War<http://www.oxforddnb.com/public/themes/98/98219.html>.
