[Yulwww] e-resources appropriate use statement redux

Many of you may remember that back in June I asked all of you who maintain
webpages that list any of our electronic resources to include a short
statement about appropriate use that links to a fuller webpage statement.
(See original request below).

I'm happy to say that many of you have been working to do this.

However, just recently questions about our user community arose, and have
resulted in a very slight modification of the short statement so that "Yale
community" links to another page that provides a fuller list of who is part
of the Yale community.

This made me realize that it is unwise to ask all of you to place text on
each of your pages when there may be future need to modify the text. Thus,
I finally realized the right way to do this is for me to build an "include"
file that you can all reference in the appropriate place on your webpages.

For those of you who have webpages on www.library.yale.edu, the correct
reference in the HTML coding of your pages is:

<!--#include virtual="/ecollections/appropriateuse.html" -->

Those of you who have webpages on other servers may want to copy the source
code (http://www.library.yale.edu/ecollections/appropriateuse.html) and
create your own include files on those other servers. I'll announce any
future changes (not that I expect there to be many or often!) when they
happen so that if you have those cloned includes on other servers you can
update them.

=================June 18 2004====================

PIC recently approved a short statement with a link to a longer document
that Ann Okerson and I composed outlining the general expectations for
appropriate use of our licensed electronic resources. The intent of the
short header statement and the longer document is to provide guidance for
our readers who may not know to or feel inclined to go review the specific
permitted uses of a particular resource.

The short statement with link is now visible from the "master" lists of
e-resources on the front door (ejournal, databases, etc.) My next goal is
to have it included on subject specific webpages as well.

I will be happy to work with any of you who have Yelmo/dbow/ejournals
headers and footers for your subject pages to include the statement in an
aesthetically pleasing location for your page headers.

However, I know there are a number of units that have lists of electronic
resources that they build outside the YELMO/DBOW, etc. environment. (e.g.
Arts Library or Social Sciences Library).

So, by this same message, I'm requesting that those pages also be reviewed
for the possible inclusion of the below text.

Electronic resources are licensed for the noncommercial, educational, or
research use of the Yale community and those who are physically present at
our library facilities. Systematic downloads, distribution or long-term
storage of substantial portions of information is prohibited.

(the final word: "More" is linked to:
<http://www.library.yale.edu/about/app_use.html>http://www.library.yale.edu/about/app_use.html
)

Thanks for your help with this effort and I'll be happy to answer any
questions people have.

[For the curious, this effort is becoming more important as we get regular
report of license "breaches". For the most part, the breaches are
technical holes in our network which we can plug and move on from, but
occasionally we get "true" reader abuses of our e-resources, and it will
become increasingly important to be able to say "THIS is where we've told
you that you cannot do that."]
