Interesting letter from Brad Wheeler and Pat Steele. Thanks, Stefan.
I wanted to mention a "companion piece" of sorts, an interview with Brad Wheeler in the Jan. 6 Library Journal Academic Newswire http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA6626869.html
Wheeler gives some more details about the HathiTrust shared repository (http://www.hathitrust.org/) and discusses how, given its gargantuan size, index "shards", metadata facets, and relevance-ranking algorithms can optimize system response time and enhance findability (which reminds me of the Yufind project).
Also, in terms of projects that "build up capacity", he mentioned that two of the HathiTrust partners, Michigan and Indiana, had already "benefitted tremendously from our past cooperation in the Sakai Project for open source courseware management software. Learning to work together across institutions to deliver production services is an important capability for the foreseeable future."
/ Daniel

An interesting "Letter to the Editor" from the Dean of University Libraries & the V.P. for IT & CIO at Indiana U.:
http://chronicle.com/wiredcampus/article/3543/letter-to-the-editor-librarians-and-tech-officials-must-get-along-to-meet-future-challenges
Extract:
"None of the compelling issues facing academic libraries today can be accomplished without strong support from IT departments. Among them: establishing robust institutional repositories; supporting e-science and data curation services; providing metadata and e-text consultation; growing a virtual reference community; and developing course management systems."
