Shoreline (Madison - Old Lyme) Butterfly Count

Hi All -

    Perfect weather on Tuesday, June 19th led to a record-setting species total on the Shoreline Butterfly Count in Madison / Old Lyme area.  Lenny Brown, Rich Chyinski and Ted Hendrickson joined me in the field - Lenny and I were in Westbrook / Deep River / Essex, and Ted and Rich in the Lyme / Old Lyme area.

    Overall, 32 butterfly species were sighted, a new record for this count, for a total of 712 individuals.  The list follows, with notes of interest for selected species.

Black Swallowtail - 3 (ties record high)
Tiger Swallowtail - 6
Spicebush Swallowtail - 8 (tie)
Cabbage White - 82
Clouded Sulphur - 17 (new high)
Orange Sulphur - 19 (high)
Banded Hairstreak - 1
Edwards' Hairstreak - 1 (new to count)
Eastern Tailed-Blue - 5
Summer Azure - 1
Great Spangled Fritilary - 53 (high)
Pearl Crescent - 2
Question Mark - 1
Eastern Comma - 4 (new to count!)
American Lady - 10
Red Admiral - 3 (tie)
Red-spotted Purple - 6 (high)
Little Wood-Satyr - 20
Monarch - 4
Silver-spotted Skipper - 16
Hoary Edge - 2
Northern Cloudywing - 3
Juvenal's Duskywing - 1 (new)
Wild Indigo Duskywing - 1 (new)
Least Skipper - 84 (high)
European Skipper - 140
Peck's Skipper - 57 (high)
Tawny-edged Skipper - 22

Miscellaneous notes;
    Did NOT find the Hickory Hairstreak seen the previous day
    Most egregious miss - American Copper
    Most unexpected - Dusted Skipper and Edwards' Hairstreak
    One Eastern Comma followed Lenny and me, landing on our bodies, and eventually riding on my net for 40 yards! (see photo)
