protecting eggs on host plants

What is a good way to protect the host plants when there are eggs/caterpillars on them? Many times I have been lucky enough to have caterpillars on my parsley and dill plants, and sadly they disappear. I'm sure they were tasty snacks for the birds.

I have even tried netting over/around the plants.
